I have some sad news to report. Lucy Friedman, my friend and former assistant, passed away on Tuesday morning at her home in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Her two children, Cindy and Ben, were there with her, which really helped her transition peacefully.
Lucy was adored by all who met her. Even though she retired only a few years ago, clients from long ago remembered her and asked about her. She would oftentimes sit at a restaurant bar having a lemon drop and some appetizers, and talking with strangers or clients. She loved to meet new people.
Lucy was affectionately known by many as "Miss Piggy." Approximately 10 years ago she had to have a heart valve replaced and it was replaced with a pig's heart valve. After that, she became Miss Piggy, as she was part pig. Clients would bring her pigs of all sorts, and she had quite the collection. We still have some around the office, and she took many with her when she retired.
Lucy was instrumental in starting and expanding my legal practice. We met as neighbors in 2002, served on the HOA board together for years, and in 2006 she decided to give up her medical sales career to take on an entirely new position as a Legal Assistant. She loved to learn, and was meticulous in details, which is essential in a legal practice.
Lucy retired at 80, which is remarkable. She certainly would have continued working if her health had been better. She remained sharp as a tack. She was playful. She was a good soul. She was also like a second mother to me, which meant that we oftentimes would get in arguments like families normally do. We'd get over it quickly, and then have dinner at El Mirasol, one of her absolute favorite places to get a good margarita.
Goodbye Granny (also her nickname). Thank you for your friendship, mentorship, support and love. I will miss you.
Love, Chris
