Before there was a lake...
..there was a river winding through a mountain valley.

In 1902, construction of the original dam transformed this landscape forever, creating the lake that would soon become the centerpiece of one of North Carolina's most celebrated mountain destinations.

It's remarkable to imagine this valley before the water ever arrived.

History begins with a single moment—and this was one of them.

Meet Arlang, one of our 2026 Stars.

At 16, Arlang is standing at the beginning of something.

He is thoughtful, well-spoken and remarkably grounded. He looks you in the eye. He listens when others speak. He treats people with genuine respect. There is a quiet confidence in the way he carries himself that makes you take notice.

And then you get to see the teenager underneath all that maturity.

He loves football and the Miami Hurricanes. He lights up talking about his high school cooking class and takes pride in what he can create in the kitchen. Hot chicken sandwiches are a favorite, while steak, mashed potatoes and green beans have become his signature.

Ask him which Miami Hurricane he would most want to meet, and he chooses Malachi Toney. But it’s the question he would ask him that tells you something about Arlang:

“What motivated you to do what you do?”

At 16, Arlang is beginning to discover that answer for himself. What he loves. What he’s good at. What he wants for his future. And what kind of man he wants to become.

You can already see pieces of that man today. In the respect he shows others. The pride he takes in himself. And especially in the relationship he shares with his mom, a bond filled with love, trust and an unmistakable closeness.

There is so much ahead for Arlang.

And maybe that’s what makes celebrating him so special. We aren’t just celebrating the young man standing before us today.

We’re celebrating the man he is becoming.

Arlang, you’ve always been a Star. Now everyone gets to see it.
