The citizens of Butte County have overwhelmingly approved Measure H!

The Board of Supervisors heard the voters and immediately took action by restoring a number of the public safety positions that have been cut in recent years including:

- 27 Correctional Deputies
- 12 Deputy Sheriffs
- 2 Sheriff's Sergeants

- 7 Prosecutors

- 34 CALFIRE positions

- 9 Probation Officers

And the reinstatement of library services to fully open status!

The restoration of positions is a necessary first step, but Butte County continues to face challenges with recruiting and retention within the public safety units.

We just want to express how grateful we are to the community for supporting public safety in this last election. Let's continue keeping Butte County strong!

This week the Butte County Board of Supervisors entertained the idea of a 1% tax measure on this November's ballot. This measure would allow the County to generate much needed revenue for the General Fund. As you can see below, this is small portion of our County's overall budget. It is the only portion of the budget that can and will pay for public safety: CalFire, Butte County Sheriff's Office, the Butte County Probation Department, the Jail, The DA's office, and our county's public defender's.
Because of budget issues, I have seen our prosecutor's office shrink from 29 prosecutors to 19 in the last decade. Two more prosecutors announced they would be taking new jobs over the past two weeks, further diminishing our numbers and years of overall experience. We have attempted to attract new prosecutors to our office with the promise of a $30K signing bonus, which has not resulted in any new hires to date.
This last fiscal year, Butte County had an 11 million dollar deficit in the general fund, which was covered with money from the PG&E Settlement. It allowed the County to keep things at status quo; well that as well as eliminating unfilled positions. Our office lost 3 prosecutor spots during that cut. Using this pot of money to cover costs will not last forever and the time is now to provide an additional revenue stream to those who choose to keep Butte County safe can continue to do so.
While the thought of additional taxes pains me personally, the thought of being unable to keep my community safe keeps me awake at night. Please educate yourself about the 1% tax you are being asked to consider this November. Don't have a knee jerk reaction. Take the time to attend an educational meeting. Tune into the Board of Supervisor's meetings, which you can watch online.
Reach out to your friends and family who work in public safety. Your vote matters on this issue and I know, once you have the information in front of you, you will see the 1% tax is the only feasible option to keep our residents protected and safe.
