In a 7-2 decision, the United States Supreme Court has issued the Opinion affirming the dismissal of the ADA claim brought against the City of Sanford, vindicating the City once and for all on a claim we have been proudly litigating on their behalf for five years. We are thrilled for the City and so very proud of Jessica Conner - who brilliantly handled the appeal and oral argument before the Eleventh Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. It has truly been a privilege to represent the interests of Sanford and it is not lost on us the amount of trust placed in DRML to handle this matter all the way to the United States Supreme Court!

Today Jessica Conner, our Board Certified Appellate attorney, argued in front of the United States Supreme Court in the Stanley v. City of Sanford case. Doug Noah and Patti Rego Chapman, whose Motion to Dismiss was up on appeal, attended oral argument and assisted throughout the intensive preparation process. The argument focused on a City policy regarding retirement benefits and involved nuanced statutory interpretation involving a former employee’s right to sue for disability discrimination under Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Jessica was poised, passionate, and expertly fielded a salvo of difficult questions from the highest Court in the land. The DRML team’s hard work and commitment to zealous client advocacy, along with Jessica’s impeccable oral advocacy skills, were on full display!

Congratulations to Shareholders Jessica Conner, Doug Noah, and Patti Chapman, on a great victory for the City of Sanford that came down today from the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals! Doug and Patti successfully represented the City at the trial court level on claims brought under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Equal Protection Clause, and Florida law. They prevailed on a Motion to Dismiss on the ADA claims, and the rest of the claims were disposed of at Summary Judgment. On appeal, DRML’s Board Certified Appellate attorney, Jessica Conner, stepped in to argue against plaintiff’s counsel and counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, which appeared as an amicus curiae. Jessica successfully addressed a novel and unresolved issue of law regarding standing under the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as the various other points raised on appeal. Their combined efforts resulted in a complete and well deserved victory for the City of Sanford!

In fact, they donated a combined total of over 150 hours!
