On Saturday, April 30, 1983, Jane E. Carey was sworn into the Florida Bar by Judge Larry Bodiford in her hometown of Panama City, Florida at the courthouse. The powers that be in Panama City allowed her grandfather, Pasco Gainer Sr, to have the ceremony at the court house. Although, they refused to turn on the air conditioner the during the ceremony. The family was proud to have Attorney Carey’s private swearing in at the courthouse in Panama City. She was joined by her family and loved ones at a reception hosted by her mother, Mary Carey, in their home.

Today we celebrate Attorney Carey for 40 years of service to the State of Florida and beyond. Attorney Carey is most notable for taking on cases other attorneys would not, and walking out the court room victorious for her clients. She credits her grandfather for her dedication to service because he taught her how to use entrepreneurship as a tool for community building. Attorney Carey’s most notable cases Finley v. Scott and Gregory K, not only changed the law in Florida, but these cases revolutionized family law around the world.

With a career spanning four decades, Attorney Carey has represented clients who were married in the 1940s and represented five generations of the same families. In 2020, when COVID19 shut the world down, Attorney Carey transformed her law office overnight to make sure that her clients continued to receive excellent legal care even during great uncertainty.

Attorney Carey is a proud Fiskite, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and member of Fellowship Baptist Church of Pinehills.

Of all her many accomplishments Attorney Carey takes the most pride in being a mother of two, Harry H. Morall III and Mary E. Morall, with her late husband, Harry H. Morall II. Although, she is known by many in the community as “Ms. Jane”.

Time-sharing can be difficult during holidays as both parents may have their own traditions or plans for the day, but what matters most is that parents work to provide their children with beautiful life long memories. Days like today I reminiscence on when my children were small and the activities we’d share. Happy Resurrection Day to those who celebrate!

As I ponder receiving the 2022 Drum Major Award for Social Justice, named after the Late Dr. Marin Luther King, I think about the sacrifices made for me and other children of the era of his children. I am in the age group of his four little children that he spoke about in his famous I Have A Dream Speech.
Not only did Dr. King have that dream, but so many of our parents and grandparents share that dream.

I’m honored that my 38 years serving the State of Florida has helped so many families realize their own dreams, to create their families as they please.

I’m so grateful that my community continues to see me and honor me.

I’m most grateful I was able to share the moment with my 95 year old mother as we watched the event together in our living room.

Thank you again to the Delta Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. for choosing me to receive this honor. For those of you that missed the ceremony I’ll post the link in the comments below.

I’m happy to announce that I have been selected as the 2022 MLK Drum Award Winner for Social Justice (check the comments for the free registration link to the 36th Annual MLK Commemorative Luncheon). I am truly honored to be recognized for my labor of love as I’d just say “I’m helping the people”.

In 1984, I opened my solo practice becoming the first Black woman solo practitioner in the area. During the day I served as a the first Black woman Public Defender in Orange County, Florida. At night I operated my solo practice in the heart of historic Parramore corridor. Dr. I. S. Hankins owned the building that housed my first office. The following year my late husband left his job at a personal injury firm to join me and for 20 years we worked side by side as zealous advocates for working class and poor people. When I transitioned back into my solo practice the social climate had shifted a bit and the idea of a Black woman owned law firm was more well received. I was inspired to go into a solo practice by my late grandfather, Pasco Gainer Snr. My grandfather advised me to open my practice in the community I served and make sure I always provide people with excellent legal care. My mother, Mary Carey, gave me the money to open my practice. My son made me a mother and allowed me the opportunity to better understand the families I served. I was no longer just a lawyer, I was a mother and an attorney.

Although this award is being granted to me in honor of my Service to All Mankind, I felt it best I dedicate this award to my daughter, Mary E. Morall. Mary Elizabeth has truly brought her Mama into the new millennium! As many businesses struggled to keep their doors open during COVID19, Mary Elizabeth came up with creative solutions to guarantee our clients didn’t miss a beat, and she ensured that our clients who aren’t tech savvy cauld still get attentive legal care in this new Zoom era.

I’d like to thank the Delta Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. for thinking of me to be bestowed this phenomenal honor. Thank you all for choosing me time and time again as your lawyer during some of life’s most difficult moments.

P.S. some of you have asked will I be retiring and the answer is no. I think God still has more in store for me.

Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours. As the holiday season continues to grow it’s important that parents put the best interest of their children first. These moments will turn into the memories your children will reflect on and cherish or despise. Adult battles should never turn children into soldiers. Gift your children peace when it’s time to go from one home to another this holiday season.

Today’s blessing brought a beautiful surprise floral arrangement sent by a former client. For over 35 years I have walked with my clients during life’s most difficult moments sharing tears and laughter. It always warms my heart when they think of me too. Happy Monday Everyone!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas and folks mothering! Children grow in our hearts. The act of mothering is life altering, and I am so grateful for the love and laughter my loved ones share with me. This is our second Mother’s Day in this pandemic environment and so many loved ones have been lost. As we navigate the grief I work to hold space for some gratitude. This Mother’s Day is extra special to me as my daughter is preparing to graduate from law school. Watching our children grow is special, but watching my daughter follow my footsteps brings me an extraordinary joy. Happy Mother’s Day 💓

Last weekend we gave our second free Estate Planning workshop with the Delta Omicron Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. Virtual workshops have allowed for "Service to All Mankind" to continue safely from our home while also providing the community with much needed information. So far we have been able to give back to over 100 people in the community by providing folks with educational information on durable power of attorney, and wills. Have a safe weekend everyone!

As the world shifted online over night the legal profession was brought to a standstill. My staff and I work tirelessly to make sure that our clients cases stay in motion by utilizing virtual and telephonic conferences. However, we've realized that virtual meetings can't meet the needs of our clients who may not have access to certain technologies or who may not be tech savvy. "Modern problems require modern solutions" so my daughter helped me stage our entry way as a COVID19 compliant drive thru meeting space. We will still wear masks, face shields and check our client's temperature, but we can bring some comfort and connection during these times. Call us at (407) 425-2508 if you would like to schedule a virtual or drive thru consultation. Be safe folks!
