As a litigator, I’m constantly reminded of this. The importance of emotional intelligence when dealing with stressful situations (or people) cannot be overemphasized. You can’t always control what’s going on around you, but you can control how you respond. Make it a great (calm) week.

For all my FSU alums ... from Sunday’s online edition of Orlando Sentinel

RIGHTING A WRONG AT FSU LAW SCHOOL. Looking ahead: Not far from the stadium where FSU’s football team will be led onto the field by its first full-time Black coach, history is also being made. BK Roberts Hall, the building that houses the FSU College of Law (my alma mater) may be getting a new name. The President’s Advisory Panel on Namings and Recognitions has recommended Roberts’ name be removed from the building. Roberts served as Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court which defied a U.S. Supreme Court order to admit Virgil Hawkins, the first black student at UF law school. He even authored the Court’s 2 opinions denying Hawkins’ admission citing junk science (Blacks’ inherent low aptitude) and fear mongering (unfounded threats of riots were he allowed to attend UF). His name has been a constant stain on the institution and an affront to every student - black or white -who has ever attended. It’s about time Roberts’ name was excised from this symbol of law and justice.

What an honor speaking to graduating senior International Baccalaureate students at Jones High today! They were a bright, engaging and inquisitive group and kept me on my toes! Can’t believe it’s been 26 years since my classmates and I were some of the 1st International Baccalaureate grads in Volusia County. Congrats and Godspeed to all of the grads (especially the one headed to the U in the fall)!

A Federal Judge just issued an order criticizing the President’s revocation of DACA, calling the decision “arbitrary and capricious” and therefore, unconstitutional. The legal term used by the Court is familiar to lawyers. It basically means the decision abolish DACA is without reason or logic and unsupported by a discernible objective calculus. The administration has 90 days to better explain its rationale.
If that ruling sounds familiar, it’s because, its the exact same basis used by a different Federal judge to explain the patent unfairness and unconstitutionality of Florida’s process of returning (or actually not returning) voting rights to ex-felons. The governor is also on the clock - to fix his system to restore civil rights to make sure it’s not “arbitrary and capricious”.

The U.S. District Court judge put his decision on hold for 90 days to give the Department of Homeland Security time to provide a better explanation as to why the program is unlawful.
