Florida Residents can avoid pain in the *** permitting by following these Helpful Hurricane Preparation Tips:
1. Get your land survey updated before EVERYONE needs their survey updated.
- CHECK your land survey! IF it is over 2 years old many municipalities won't let you use it for permits. Confirm with your local municipality and reach out to your land surveyor for a recertification. Better to take care of it now because the post hurricane lead times get LONG.
2. Locate your utility sources and be ready to turn them off.
- If this is your first hurricane season in your current home, be sure to locate your water, electric, and appliance gas shut off locations. This is especially important for flash flood emergencies or prior to evacuating.
3. Avoid preventable damage i.e. trim your trees, caulk exterior wall openings
- Identify and remove weak branches and dead trees (get a professional). Remove all clutter and debris from your property. Seal outside wall openings such as vents, outdoor electrical outlets, garden hose bibs and locations where cables or pipes go through the wall. Use a high-quality urethane-based caulk to prevent water pe*******on.
Extra Tip: Confirm your flood zone status! You can always go to your County's Property Appraiser site or use FEMA's Flood Map linked below
