Bittersweet to be at Lawry’s Carvery for lunch today before they close their doors for good on Monday. When I was 16, my brother Curtis got me my first job here just as they were opening to the public.
A decade later, I brought my new girlfriend, Jessica, here for lunch to take a break from law school finals. To my surprise, I learned that she had also worked here at Lawry’s - she started the summer after I left. Maybe they were the only restaurant in the mall hiring teenagers back then, but I took it as a sign.
Since then, it’s been our go-to lunch spot to celebrate each other. I took Jess here for our favorite sandwich, the green peppercorn dip, on her first day as an attorney. And she returned the favor, two more peppercorns, after my first win at trial.
So I should not have been surprised when we pulled up outside Lawry’s today to celebrate our son Weston’s six month and my 36th birthday. Over its 20 year run, this fast-casual, prime rib sandwich shop next to the Macy’s Mens somehow became our place. Thanks, Jessica, for bringing me and our little peppercorn back to Lawry’s for one last sandwich. It was delicious, just like I remembered.
