What happens when a child support order from the 1980s follows a family for decades?

In one of the more unusual cases discussed in Episode 3 of Confessions of a Divorce Assassin, a father in his 60s owed more than $150,000 in back child support. The children were already adults, but decades of accrued interest had caused the arrearage to grow significantly.

And that was just one of the unusual cases discussed in this episode.

Being emotionally abused by an ex can change your custody case.

Ongoing emotional or verbal abuse can affect joint legal custody. Courts require parents to be able to communicate and make major decisions together. When abuse makes that impossible, judges can shift from joint to sole legal custody.

If the abuse happens in front of the kids or during exchanges, it can also impact physical custody and the visitation schedule.

If you're navigating a situation like this, our attorneys are here to help you build the right case. Services linked in bio.

Not every issue in a divorce has to be decided by a judge. In many cases, the majority of issues can be resolved through settlement or mediation — trial is usually reserved for the one or two matters you genuinely can't agree on, like how to characterize separate property or value a shared asset. Litigating everything gets expensive fast, so settling what you can and saving trial for what really matters often makes the most sense.

Not married? Don’t Sign an Acknowledgment of Paternity.

A document handed to you at the hospital may seem like a simple formality, but signing an Acknowledgment of Paternity can have significant legal consequences.
As Nebraska divorce and family law attorney Meagan Spomer explains in this clip, once paternity has been established, it may be difficult to challenge later, even if genetic testing shows that you are not the biological father.

The takeaway? Don’t sign a legal document you don’t fully understand.
