Big update for Veterans receiving TDIU benefits:
The U.S. Census Bureau just released the 2025 poverty threshold for one person: $16,330. This is the number the VA uses to decide whether your employment counts as "marginal" or "substantially gainful."
If you're on TDIU and earning income from part-time work, gig work, or self-employment, this is your number to watch.
Key things every Veteran on TDIU should know:
• Only your earned income counts, not VA compensation, Social Security, or your spouse's income
• The threshold is based on one person, even if you have dependents VA uses the Census Bureau threshold ($16,330), not the HHS poverty guideline ($15,960)
• Going over the limit doesn't automatically end your benefits, but VA may send you a Form 21-4140 to verify your employment
• Working in a protected environment with special accommodations? You may still qualify even if you earn more
Don't wait until VA contacts you to figure this out. Stay informed, track your income, and if you need help with a TDIU decision, reach out.
