One piece of arithmetic. It takes ten seconds and it ends most arguments.

The Rule of 72.

72 ÷ your rate of return = the number of years your money takes to double.

8% → doubles in 9 years
12% → doubles in 6 years
4% → doubles in 18 years

That's it. That's the whole thing.

Now sit with it, because the gap between 4% and 12% doesn't look like much on a page. Over thirty years it's the difference between your money doubling once and doubling five times. Same dollar. Same thirty years. Wildly different life.

Five words I wrote in my own log on August 17, 2009:

"I am 40 and almost broke."

Not dramatically broke. No repo man, no eviction. Worse than that, in a way — I was fine. Employed, respected, competent. Three careers deep, having rebuilt my whole skillset every time the industry moved: COBOL, then PowerBuilder, then Java.

And I had almost nothing to show for any of it.

Here's what took me years to understand. It wasn't a grit problem. I had grit. I had rebuilt myself from scratch three separate times to stay employable. Nobody works their way out of that with more effort.

It was a mechanics problem. Every dollar I'd ever earned was the same kind of dollar — the kind you trade hours for, the kind taxed hardest, the kind that stops the day you stop.

Three things changed it, and the first one was just this: I stopped measuring how much I earned and started measuring what I owned.

That's the conversation we had at the Round Table last Thursday. We'll be building on it September 24.

Twenty seats. Twenty people. Nobody looking at a phone.

Thursday morning at The Entrepreneurs' Round Table we had the money conversation almost nobody had with us growing up.

Not a stock tip. Not a pitch. Not one person working the room for business cards. Just three words on a screen — earned, portfolio, passive — and twenty entrepreneurs finding out, on paper, which one has actually been paying them.

Look closely at that photo. People are writing. That's the part I care about. You can sit through a talk and feel inspired and change nothing. Writing your own number down in your own handwriting is where it stops being a seminar and starts being a decision.

One man ran the arithmetic and realized every dollar he'd made in thirty years died the moment he stopped working for it. He's not broke. He's successful. That was the uncomfortable part.

I like this photo more than the full ones. An empty chair is an actual invitation - somebody either takes it or it sits there all morning.

I was forty and almost broke.

Not dramatically broke. Worse — respectably broke. Good income, good title, three careers' worth of skills, and nothing underneath any of it. Eventually it did stop, and we went through bankruptcy.

Eleven years later my wife and I bought a ten-unit building.

That's not a redemption story. Redemption stories are entertaining and useless — they make it sound like the difference was grit. It wasn't. Plenty of people work harder than I ever did and end up where I was at forty.

What changed was mechanical:

• I stopped measuring what I earned and started measuring what I kept, and in what form
• I learned the tax treatment of a dollar depends on which quadrant it came from
• I bought the first thing that paid me while I slept. It was small. It was not impressive.

E — Employee. Someone else owns the system; you occupy a seat in it.
S — Self-employed. You own the job. It stops when you stop.
B — Business owner. A system other people run, that runs without you.
I — Investor. Your money is the thing doing the work.

Here's the part that cost me years: most of us who left a job think we left E. We didn't. We moved to S — the employee quadrant with more risk, longer hours and nobody to blame. I ran it that way a long while and called it freedom.

Four minutes: take last year's income, break it into sources, put a letter beside each. If 90% lands in E and S, you're where almost everyone is. That's a starting line, not a grade.
