TRF and family recently participated in the MoveFTT Challenge to move at least a mile every day for 35 consecutive days. It can be tough to stay active in the busy legal world, but we were determined to support the important work of the For Their Thoughts Foundation - Rethink Dementia. We got a little help from our furry friends, too! Thank you to all the people and pups who helped us be part of the total $30,000 raised and almost 10,000 miles moved.

You can support the For Their Thoughts Foundation in building supportive community for those affected by dementia. Visit https://www.fortheirthoughts.org/ to learn more.

As our nation celebrates 250 years of independence from Great Britain, we celebrate one of our greatest strengths: the rule of law. For generations, our courts have provided a place where disputes are resolved through fairness instead of force. Civil litigation plays an important role in protecting rights, enforcing agreements, and helping parties move forward in the face of conflict. While the legal system has evolved over the centuries, its purpose remains the same: to provide a just process for resolving disputes.

At TRF, we're proud to serve clients throughout the country and to contribute to this enduring tradition. Happy 250th anniversary, America!

Eleven years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued the landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, recognizing the constitutional right of same-sex couples to marry. Obergefell reinforced the principles of equal protection and due process under the law for Americans in all 50 states. The decision also secured a wide range of legal rights and protections tied to marriage, including inheritance rights, tax benefits, parental recognition, healthcare decision-making authority, and spousal benefits.

While legal and policy debates concerning LGBTQIA+ rights continue to evolve, Obergefell remains one of the most consequential civil rights rulings in our nation’s history. As we reflect on this anniversary, we recognize the profound effect Obergefell v. Hodges has had on individuals, families, employers, and communities nationwide.

TRF remains committed to ensuring that protections of the law are applied equally and support the rights and dignity of all people.

Sibling, Daughter, Wife, Mom, Civil Rights Activist, New York State Senator, Federal Judge, Author – these are just some of the titles held by Constance Baker Motley. She was the only female attorney on the legal team that won Brown v. Board of Education. Constance Baker Motley argued and won 9 out of 10 civil rights cases before the SCOTUS; you can thank Constance Baker Motley for desegregation of restaurants and colleges.

Judge Baker Motley overturned convictions of protesters and was appointed to the federal bench at the urging of both Republicans and Democrats.

She published her autobiography in 1988, “Equal Justice Under Law: The Live of a Pioneer for Black Civil Rights and Women’s Rights” (https://bookshop.org/.../equal-justice.../9780374526184). If you are in OKC, TRF has a copy to lend!

Judge Baker was inducted to the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993 and Bill Clinton awarded her the Presidential Citizen’s Medal in 2001.

As early as her high school years, Constance Baker Motley was a respected activist. After graduating from New York University, she obtained her law degree from Columbia in 1946 and spent 20 years with the NAACP. Judge Kimba Wood described her as having ``the strength of a self-made star. As she grew, she was unfailingly optimistic and positive; she never let herself be diverted from her goal of achieving civil rights, even though, as she developed as a lawyer, she faced almost constant condescension from our profession due to her being an African-American woman.''

Constance Baker Motley should be a household name because she paved the way for so many humans, and her legacy should never be forgotten.

In 1870, General James B. McKean spoke at a Memorial Day ceremony in New York City. He concluded with the words: “We are told by those who can see and hear more than others can, that flowers have language, and that the stars make music…Bring then the flowers with the sweetest breath and the most cheerful voices…we, comrades, will join our less musical, but not discordant, voices with theirs, in ‘Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty.’”
