Under a new anti-texting law, which carries a $100 fine, it is illegal to read or manually compose or send a text message while driving a moving vehicle in Oklahoma. Hands-free applications are permitted.

Often I have friends ask me for my opinions about elections for judges. In Oklahoma, we have non-partisan elections for District Judges (who are the judges who conduct trials in county courthouses), and retention votes for appellate judges (who work in the Oklahoma Supreme Court, Oklahoma Courts of Civil Appeals, and the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals).
For Oklahoma County, I would respectfully request that you vote for:
Don Andrews. Judge Andrews is a sitting special judge (limited jurisdiction) and has done an excellent job since being appointed. He is now running for District Judge. I have personally known Don Andrews for may years and respect his integrity, service and impartiality.
Donald DEASON who is an experienced judge and has proven very effective in our judicial system. It is my opinion that Judge DEASON has drawn an opponent hoping to capitalize on last name confusion. Name confusion aside, Judge Donald DEASON is a better choice than his challenger.
Judge Roger Stuart is also another experienced and affable judge who has rendered solid judicial service first in our juvenile courts and now in our Civil Docket. It would be a loss for Oklahoma County to lose him from the bench.
Judge Thomas Prince was appointed by the governor to fill a vacancy in Oklahoma County in 2012. He has done a good job in these two years and works diligently. His opponent does not have the same judicial experience or the legal experience and background.
I am not commenting on all the appellate judges and justices. However, I endorse the retention of Joseph M. Watt on the Oklahoma Supreme Court and Jerry L. Goodman on the Court of Civil Appeals.

Interesting story from a legal aspect as well. Because the man was never divorced from his Canadian wife, his subsequent marriage to his Oklahoma wife was a legal sham, void ab initio (void from its inception) because, still being married, he was not legally able to enter marriage.(43 O.S. § § 1, 3 ).
Because the marriage was not valid, no divorce can be awarded. In Tatum v, Tatum, 1982 OK 62 ,736 P.2d 506, the Oklahoma Supreme Court held that a parties’ prior existing marriage precludes a possibility of a common-law marriage. Id. at 21. Further, in Whitney v. Whitney, 1942 OK 268, 124 P.2d 357, 192 Okla.174, the Oklahoma Supreme Court held that an attempted marriage while one spouse is still married is “void ab initio.” Id. at 0.

If you make this common courthouse mistake during your Family Law case, it may not matter how sharp or prepared you are in the courtroom.
Some quick but meaningful legal advice to all law abiding (and those who are not) Oklahomans THUNDER UP!!
As a matter of legal practice I avoid commenting about the representation of my clients because of ethical requirements of confidentiality and respect for their right to privacy in such matters.
In general terms, I make an exception today. I was humbly reminded of the power and dignity of our judicial system and the reasons I feel privileged to practice law and represent clients whom I respect and serve.
As I prepared for trial, I was aware that the controversy being addressed was created more than eight years previously and had been in litigation for five years. My client desperately longed for resolution of the issues which had escaped final decision year after year, hearing after hearing.
As I arrived at the courthouse, I saw the apprehension and the nervous anticipation.
After the conclusion of testimony, the judge uttered the words my client had longed to hear for so many years. Finally, it was over, she was through; equity was delivered in mere words said from a citizen dressed in a robe dressed with years of experience to a fellow citizen completely reliant upon the judge’s exercise of principles of law tempered with the judicial temperament not found in legal books or citations.
As the court delivered the long awaited decision, my client covered her face and quietly wept. We were respectfully silent as she processed the decision. The judge uttered words of encouragement and we left the room changed - my client now able to face the world anew and her attorney with his spirits renewed that our legal system can be as beautiful as it is at times necessarily cold.
On April 15, I posted about an attempt to reform the Judiciary Nomination Committee by the Oklahoma Legislature. The Judiciary Nomination Committee has been a non-partisan committee that reviews judiciary applicants and advances the most qualified to the Governor for her appointment. The attempted measure would have replaced the current six committee members selected by the Oklahoma Bar Association, which is an appendage of the Oklahoma Supreme Court, and only have the House Speaker, the Senate President Pro Tempore, and the Governor select the judiciary. In effect, this would have given one political party the sole power to appoint judges, thus eroding a constitutionally intended check and balance.
I am happy to report that the measure, SJR21, was defeated last Thursday by a vote of 65-31.

I just attended the funeral services for Sandra Taylor. She was a remarkable person who lived every moment of life.
Her daughter reminded us that her mom 's motto of trying anything at least once created a sense of adventure and opportunity in the children's lives; and to be able to laugh at life's silly mistakes.
My thoughts are with Don and the family this day.
