Going to mediation doesn't mean you're giving in.

We hear versions of this concern a lot.

People sometimes walk into mediation thinking they're expected to cave, meet in the middle on absolutely everything, or somehow admit the other person was right.

That's not the point. Mediation gives both sides an opportunity to work through issues, explore possible solutions, and see whether an agreement can be reached.

And yes, you can still advocate for yourself. In fact, that's kind of the idea.

Not every case will be resolved at mediation, and not every proposed compromise is one you have to accept. But when it works, mediation can give the people involved more say in the outcome instead of leaving those decisions entirely to the court.

We love that you agree. Truly. Makes everyone's day easier.

But even when a divorce is amicable, the details still matter. Property. Finances. Parenting schedules. Holidays. Responsibilities. All those things that feel perfectly obvious while everyone is getting along can become a lot less obvious six months, two years, or five years from now.

A handshake and a “we'll figure it out” might feel easier today. Future You would really appreciate Present You putting it in writing.
