Introducing our new legal intern, Chantelle Hickman-Ladd!
Chantelle graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma where she received a B.B.A. with an emphasis in legal studies. Currently she is in her 3rd year at the Oklahoma City University School of Law. She is the Articles Editor for the OCU Law Review and has been published in the Oklahoma Bar Journal for co-authoring "Changes to the Oklahoma General Corporation Act." In other words, we've snatched up a great legal intern.

Today we would like to spotlight Attorney A. Daniel Woska, Of Counsel:
Attorney Woska attended the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta. He received his B.A. in History then began working on his Master’s Degree in History when he decided that law school was the way to go. More recently, Dan received him L.L.M. in Tax Law from Boston University.
He engages in a wide range of legal practice but engaged in estate planning, trust litigation, guardianships, probate, and will contests as well as other types of litigation. Attorney Woska has been an Arbitrator since 1986 and has conducted and served as counsel on over 100 arbitrations.
While actively litigating and arbitrating cases over the last thirty-eight years, Mr. Woska has joined and been a member of the American Bar Association, Oklahoma and Oklahoma County Bar Associations, serving as Chairman or Vice-Chairman of numerous committees, including Young Lawyers, Legal Ethics and Alternative Dispute Resolution. He has also been a member of the American Association for Justice where he has served as Chairman of the Financial Securities Arbitration and Litigation Group, as well as the Christian Legal Society and PIABA.

The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys celebrated its 30th anniversary this year! Thanks to Donna J. Jackson, this is the first year for the Oklahoma Chapter of NAELA. We had a successful First Spring Annual Conference in April and we're happy to announce the dates for our First Fall Annual Conference.

A well-intended gift can turn into a nightmare when the recipient isn't provided simple, yet monumental, estate planning advice. While on Facebook during my lunch break today, I saw the post of an out-of-state friend whose daughter, who was in her late 20s, passed away in a tragic boat accident this summer. The post started out expressing frustration regarding the probate of her daughter's estate, which had to be filed in order to obtain and distribute an IRA that the young woman's parents had gifted her a few years ago. Unfortunately, the young woman didn't have beneficiaries listed on her IRA and likely was never advised to do so. This is an all too common scenario that parents are faced with when a child, who is no longer a minor, passes away unexpectedly. Estate planning is just as important for 20-somethings as it is for 60-somethings! Rather than a new car for graduation, perhaps an estate plan would be a more useful gift!

A common estate planning mistake is ignoring or forgetting to update your beneficiary designations! Do you have payable on death beneficiaries on your bank accounts?
