See you Saturday!

Join us on Saturday, August 15th, 2pm, at the Capitol Hill Library for a talk on Ending Violence Against Women.

Intimate partner violence is a global problem, but it isn't static. The dimensions of the problem vary according to region and circumstances.

The World Health Organization has adopted a global plan of action to prevent and respond to interpersonal violence in general, and against women and girls, and against children, in particular. It is part of WHO's response to the UN's Sustainable Development Goal #5, "Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls."

From an Oklahoma perspective, we will have two great speakers to bring knowledge and insights to the discussion: Susan Russell-Stewart and Yovana Lopez Medina, Abogada de Inmigración.

Susan is the retired director of the Batterers Intervention Program in Oklahoma City. She has been commended by the Oklahoma National Guard and the United States Navy for her work on their sexual-assault-awareness training programs. In 2019 she was presented with the Express Personnel Award for Excellence for her work not only with victims/survivors, but also with abusers to increase their accountability for their behavior and hopefully decrease domestic violence.

Yovana is an attorney who helps women and families navigate complex immigration processes, ensuring access to safety, stability, and opportunity. Her leadership in the YWCA Domestic Violence Victim’s Assistance Program and community boards strengthens support networks, empowers women to gain independence, and builds resilient communities.

You are welcome to bring your questions. We expect a lively discussion.

Here are the details:

In response to Trump’s latest executive orders attempting to narrow and restrict birthright citizenship, Voto Latino Executive Director Beatriz Lopez released the following statement:

“For over 150 years, the Fourteenth Amendment has served as a baseline guarantee of equality: if you are born on American soil, you are an American. Period.

It doesn’t matter what your parents look like, where they came from, or what their paperwork says. The only thing being defended when Donald Trump threatens birthright citizenship under the veil of national security is underlying racism and xenophobia.

This administration is attempting an aggressive end-run around the highest court in the land. After the U.S. Supreme Court struck down his broader executive order on June 30, Donald Trump is now attempting to drive a thousand cuts through the Fourteenth Amendment.

It won’t work.

No president gets to undermine people’s constitutional rights with the stroke of a pen. From the courts to the ballots, we’ll continue to fight for our communities.”

🚨As children’s immigration cases move forward and access to legal representation is being stripped away, language access matters more than ever.

Volunteer interpreters and translators help children communicate with their legal teams, understand what is happening in their cases, and share their experiences in their own language.

KIND is currently accepting volunteers across a variety of languages, with an immediate need for:

➡️Arabic
➡️Spanish, particularly for asylum interviews
➡️Indigenous Mayan languages
➡️Haitian Creole

Speak another language? We still encourage you to apply. Your skills can help a child feel heard and supported during a critical moment.

On August 6, 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law, marking one of the most significant victories of the Civil Rights Movement. 🌟🗳️ The law helped dismantle discriminatory voting practices that had prevented millions of Americans from exercising their fundamental right to vote.

The Voting Rights Act reminds us that expanding democracy has always required courage, organizing, and sustained civic engagement. Its legacy continues to shape conversations about voting access and participation across the country.

As we commemorate its 61st anniversary, we honor the Black civil rights leaders and multi-racial coalition of organizers who fought to make our democracy more inclusive and recognize that protecting the freedom to vote remains an ongoing responsibility.

Every eligible voter deserves the opportunity to make their voice heard, because our multi-racial, multi-ethnic democracy is strongest when everyone can participate.

Temporary status means living with a constant question mark over your future and your livelihood.

Millions of working people have built decades of their lives under programs like DACA and TPS that are actively being dismantled by this administration.

That’s not real stability for anyone.

Citizenship is the only solution to mass delegalization.

Contact your Representative today and demand that they sign on to and support Rep. Sylvia Garcia’s discharge petition for the Dream & Promise Act.
