Federal cannabis rescheduling is creating a new set of compliance questions for state-licensed cannabis businesses.

A recent case in Mississippi highlights one of them: a dispensary seeking federal protections was told that two employees’ prior felony convictions could affect its DEA registration. The business now faces a choice between pursuing employment waivers, withdrawing its application or going through an administrative hearing.

The bigger takeaway for cannabis operators is that federal rescheduling means new compliance obligations. As the regulatory framework changes, businesses need to understand how federal requirements interact with their existing operations, employees and state licenses.
