Once your child turns 18, you may no longer have automatic access to their medical information, even if they're away at college and you're still the one they'd call.

Under federal privacy rules, providers generally can't share details with a parent unless the adult patient has given permission.

That's what a HIPAA authorization is for. Your young adult signs it to name who may receive their medical information, within the limits of the document and applicable law. If a student ends up in the hospital away from home, that form can make it much easier for a parent to speak with the care team.
