In March, Takura argued before the Michigan Supreme Court that our client’s Fourth Amendment and Fifth Amendment rights were violated when he was subjected to repeated interrogation during an unreasonably prolonged detention. The Court agreed! In a just-released opinion, the Michigan Supreme Court adopted the rule that Takura advocated. Going forward, statements made while a person is detained in violation of the Fourth Amendment will be suppressed unless the government can establish that there were unavoidable intervening events breaking the causal connection between the unreasonable pre-arraignment delay and the statements. This is a welcome change for people suspected of committing crimes in Michigan. Congratulations!

Recently we spent the day celebrating Takura’s birthday! We kicked off the birthday tour with a delicious breakfast at Petal Pop Café before diving headfirst into an escape room challenge. Talk about high stakes—our team managed to escape with a nail-biting 2 seconds left on the clock! The adventure wrapped up at Crunchy's for drinks, appetizers, and a heavy dose of nostalgia. We spent the afternoon reminiscing about past celebrations and looking back on our amazing collective journey as a firm. To make the day even more special, the team sent Takura personal birthday messages every hour! It was a day filled with laughter, teamwork, and adventure. Thank you for everything you bring to our team, Takura. Cheers to you and to many more great years ahead!

C&N’s client was interrogated by a squad of police officers who ignored the client’s request for counsel and continued to grill him. Takura filed a motion to suppress the illegally obtained statements, and his efforts proved successful. Ultimately, the judge ruled that all the statements that followed our client’s request for counsel may not be used for any purpose in this case. Nicely done, Takura!

For 20 years, The Turning Point of Lansing (TTPOL) has been transforming boys to men by providing an afro-centric, group mentoring experience that gives black males an opportunity to explore life’s challenges all while developing strategies for success in their lives, school, and communities. Takura serves as a mentor for the young men and is on TTPOL’s board of directors. So he played an active role during this year’s Rights of Passage Ceremony. Way to invest in our future – the youth – Takura!
