Takura attended the recent 2026 Annual Meeting of the Criminal Law Section. Justice Kimberly Thomas delivered riveting introductory remarks and the keynote address. This year’s educational sessions revolved around digital forensics, artificial intelligence, as well as a discussion of the unreliability of fi***rm and toolmark examination evidence. Practitioners from both sides of the aisle agreed beyond a reasonable doubt that much was learned and a great time was had.

We are thrilled to share that Takura has once again been selected to serve on the faculty for the 2026 People’s Law School.

Legal literacy plays a vital role in building stronger, more informed communities. For Week 3, Takura will be co-instructing a course titled “Know Your Rights: Police Encounters” alongside 30th Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina.

This session will provide essential guidance on constitutional rights, legal obligations, and best practices during law enforcement interactions. We are honored that Takura will be sharing his trial expertise and commitment to public education alongside distinguished members of the judiciary.

Recently, the Cooley Innocence Project celebrated its 25th anniversary with a gala recognizing 25 years of advocacy, education, and work on behalf of the wrongfully convicted. The event was a resounding success and helped raise vital funds to support the Project’s continued mission.

C&N team member Nick Prowse was selected as the alumni speaker and reflected on how his time with the Cooley Innocence Project shaped his legal career, broadened his understanding of criminal defense and post-conviction work, and made him a better advocate for clients.

Congratulations to the Cooley Innocence Project and all of its incredible staff, students, alumni, and supporters on an amazing event and 25 years of important work!

Takura was thrilled to serve as a delegate during the NAACP Michigan State Conference 90th Annual Convention in Detroit. NAACP leaders, members, community advocates, youth leaders, and elected officials were among the people who attended the historic gathering. This year’s theme was “We the People.” Indeed, it was an impactful weekend of advocacy, education, and leadership development. We at C&N support the NAACP’s tireless efforts to ensure the health, well-being, and protect the rights of all people.

Last week, Marisa was sworn in as a Commissioner of the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners, which she will serve through her role as Chair Elect of the Young Lawyers Section. She looks forward to working with other members of the legal community in this role. Also, who doesn’t love a good “First Day” picture!

Mary and Marisa’s reactions were a bit different when a witness made this remark in court. Mary is almost twice the age of Marisa, so she definitely thought the testimony was funnier than Marisa!

Takura recently attended the 2026 Michigan State Bar Foundation Fellows Reception. He and other fellows from across Michigan celebrated the MSBF’s impact as well as their shared commitment to expanding access to justice. The evening also featured presentation of Foundation Awards. Since its inception, the Foundation has made grants totaling more than $210 million. Most of those funds have gone to not-for-profit legal aid programs that help to assure access to justice for all.

This past Saturday was National Chocolate Milkshake Day. In honor of this amazing day, let’s throwback to C&N’s Shake Off, where Mary, Lizzy, and Nicole battled it out over who could make the best chocolate shake. This hotly contested event ended in Nicole breezing to a win over Mary and Lizzy, who both used to get paid to make shakes!

We hope you had a chance to enjoy a yummy chocolate shake over the weekend!

For National Read a Book Day, we checked in with our favorite two-person book club: Book Baddies Book Club. Marisa and Lizzy started their very own (very small) book club to celebrate their love of reading. Two people, one shared obsession, and plenty of opinions. Right now, they’re obsessing over their current series - Dungeon Crawler Carl - because they love cats and chaos.
