I wasn’t going to post this because I don’t like the attention, but I have to give a shout out to my amazing staff and family. It’s because of my staff’s hard work that I can get these awards. If they didn’t work so hard I wouldn’t have the ability to volunteer my and their time to these cases and to do the clinic. And to my family, thank you for supporting my extra activities so I can help people in need.

Immediatley before close of business today, Governor DeSantis signed the alimony reform bill. Starting tomorrow for any pending cases or cases filed after today there will now be:

No more permanent alimony;

A requirement that the courts consider the anticipated needs of the parties, not just the standard of living;

A requirement that the courts consider the mental condition of the parties, not just the physical and emotional;

A requirement that the courts consider the resources and income of the parties, including income generated from assets, not including the distributed liabilities;

A removal of the requirement that the courts consider the tax consequences of an award;

New definitions for the length of marriage which increases a short term marriage to 10 years, a moderate termed marriage to 20 years, and a long term marriage to over 20 years;

A cap on the length of rehabilitative alimony;

Formulas for determining the length of time for alimony to be awarded and a cap on the amount of alimony;

A defined burden and on which party for modifications based upon supportive relationships;

Approval of modifications based upon reasonable retirement; and

Much more!

If you need advice on how these changes affect you, feel free to contact the office to schedule a consultation.

Starting tomorrow there will be:

a rebuttable presumption, in Florida, that it is in a child’s best interest for equal time sharing between parents;

a removal of the requirement that changes be unanticipated to modify a time-sharing order; and

the possibility for the court to consider parents moving within 50 miles of each other (when they were 50+ at the time of the last order) as a substantial change for the consideration of whether the time-sharing should be changed.

If you need to find out how these changes can affect your case and child(ren), contact my office to schedule a consultation.

For at least the last 15 years, as I’ve worked solely in Family Law, I have wanted to find a way to do my part to make changes to laws, forms, rules, and policies to help our families as they navigate the legal system. Last year, I rolled the dice, filled out a committee preference form, and hoped to get a chance to help.

For the past year, I have been honored to serve the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar as a member of several committees. I have been able to attend several meetings through the year (and state), be involved in important discussions, and work to make changes to statutes and rules. I have been blessed to work with some of the greatest minds in our state who all have an amazing passion for Florida’s families.

Today we had the last meetings of the regular committees for the 2022-2023 year. As part of our day we had a lunch with our members to welcome the new executive committee, say goodbye to the outgoing chair, and see a ton or awards and recognitions be presented.

During todays luncheon I was completely surprised and shocked to learn I too would receive an award. I am so grateful to have received a Rising Star award. Luckily, my family (hubby and son) was present to see this happen. Without their support and the support of my staff, family, friends, clients, and colleagues, I would not be able to help the way I want to.

I was honored to learn about a month ago that I will be able to continue to serve on my committees and have already volunteered for several projects. I am excited to share with you all the changes that are coming and how they will help our families.

There’s still some time left to come out to Cannon Farms to enjoy the local venders (so far we’ve tried the street corn, empanada, and lemonade and they’re fantastic!). Totally worth the admission to get some Vitamin D and love on some cute critters!
