Practice Traffic Stops

TWO SESSIONS:
Tuesday, January 12th AND Thursday, January 14th, 2021
10:00 am to 12:00 noon

The Arc of Northern Virginia has partnered with Fairfax County Police, FCPS School Board Member Rachna Sizemore Heizer, and Supervisor Rodney Lusk to create a new event to help people with disabilities interact with police officers, and vice-versa.

Practice Traffic Stops provides a non-confrontational opportunity to learn how best to behave if pulled over by a police officer. The experience is also a way for officers to gain awareness of and better understand a driver who may have a developmental disability.

People learning to drive and licensed drivers are welcome. Participants will need to bring a vehicle. The driver may bring a support person, but everyone will stay in their cars and wear a mask at all times. The practice traffic stop will be with a real police officer in a controlled environment.

Viral Facebook video launches wheelchair coat company

A mom went viral after sharing on Facebook a video of a “wheelchair coat” that she made for her daughter. The goal was to help the little girl get ready for recess faster, because by the time she was able to get her coat on, recess would nearly be over. The demand for her idea was so high that she is now making adaptive coats for people all across the country! https://www.crainsdetroit.com/crains-michigan-business/viral-facebook-video-launches-wheelchair-coat-company

In the winter of 2017, Zoey Harrison went viral. She was 9, then, and used a motorized wheelchair to get around. At school, it took her caregivers so much time in the winter to get her coat on, get her in her chair and wrap her legs in blankets that by the time they were done, recess was nearly…
