Santa Rita Jail is experiencing an astronomical COVID-19 outbreak! As of Jan 12, there were at least 216 incarcerated people and 81 staff confirmed with COVID-19! This is over a 10,700% increase in cases since the start of the year!

Santa Rita Jail has never been safe, the COVID-19 outbreak puts our incarcerated brothers and sisters at significant risk of serious illness or death. The most effective way to mitigate the harms of COVID-19 is through decarceration.

Please support our incarcerated loved ones by calling on D.A Nancy O'Malley to take immediate steps towards decarceration now. Please take 2 min to call, email, post on social media. Please share widely!

“Our folks deserve safety and dignity, and they deserve it now,” said Alex Binsfeld, legal director at the Transgender Gender-Variant & Intersex Justice Project, an advocacy group in San Francisco. “That was the whole purpose of this law. It’s literally life or death for our folks.”

“CDCR needs to be held accountable for permitting its officers to orchestrate attacks on Black men in its custody in response to the Movement for Black Lives and for exercising free speech surrounding Black liberation,” said Jen Orthwein, an attorney on the case. “The attack is one of many abuses of power CDCR’s policies and practices permit its officers to use to terrorize people and perpetuate violence.”

The racist prison system flexes its power over helpless captives inside when the masses outside protest too much.

FILING ANNOUNCEMENT: We have filed a class-action lawsuit on behalf of Black incarcerated men at the Soledad Correctional Training Facility for race discrimination. CDCR has not only harassed and terrorized its Black incarcerated persons with a raid that left many injured and COVID-stricken. CDCR continues to target these same Black men by falsely validating them as gang members or associates. CDCR needs to address its anti-Black culture that systematically oppresses Black incarcerated persons. Founding Partner Jennifer Orthwein said: “The injustice and violence invoked upon Black men incarcerated at the Soledad Correctional Training Facility were horrifying. Our clients deserve better. We hope that CDCR's leadership will see this lawsuit as an opportunity to collaborate with Black incarcerated folks to end discriminatory policies and practice associated with validation.” Learn more about our lawsuit against the CDCR here:

Two incarcerated Black men, Talib Williams and Dimario Pickford, have filed a class action lawsuit against CDCR and its top officials on behalf of approximately 200 Black men targeted in a race-based raid at a California state prison in an effort to mass validate incarcerated Black men as members, a

Tuesday, August 3 is Day—the day in 2021 when the average Black woman working full-time year-round finally catches up to what the average non-Hispanic white man earned in 2020. In other words, it takes Black women 8 extra months on average to earn what white, non-Hispanic men earn.
Join us for one or two online events leading up to and on the day of Black Women’s Equal Pay Day.
