A perfect example of why people need to get their affairs in order. An e-mail from your ex sent in 2011 when you're kids are minors, was raised as evidence in court in 2022 of why Anne Heche's estate should be controlled by him, as opposed to her 20 year old son.

Why? Because no one knows what a wealthy, intelligent and capable actress actually wanted to happen because she didn't document it legally. As a result, her family and her ex are in probate court - and we get to watch it all unfold in a public court record. Not to mention, if her ex is correct, a 20 year old who dropped out of school and was at odds with his mother about not getting a job is about to inherit a very large sum of money without any control or oversight.

Every parent needs to get an estate plan in place to ensure decisions regarding their children are their own. Not to mention, they should have a trust to prevent this exact situation from playing out in public and ensure your kids don't inherit your life savings before they're ready.

Yaasha is great, but he’s in California. If anyone has any estate planning questions for parents that live in IL. I’m happy to help.

You've planned everything for your college-bound child, from housing, books, and a laptop, but have you ever planned about their power of attorney?

A parent's job is never done, but things become more complicated when your kids leave for college.

Starting college often coincides with the time your child becomes an adult in the eyes of the law, which means you, parents, may not have a say when a financial and medical crisis hits!

Once your child reaches 18, they have the right to:
- Make their own medical decisions, even if that decision differs from what's recommended by their doctors or you as parents; and
- They can keep their medical information private, even from you.

That's why it's essential to have your college students sign a power of attorney to give you peace of mind knowing that you can manage financial and legal matters on behalf of your young adult child.

Until next time, stay informed!

The pandemic made what was once a very traumatic event for victims of abuse, a little bit safer and more comfortable in Illinois. Hoping virtual court appearances are the new norm for situations just like this and to provide more equal access to the legal system, while reducing peoples attorneys fees.

The law gives survivors the ability to file from the comfort of their own home, rather than possibly confronting their abuser at the court house.
