Parents, be ware. This is yet another attack on kids and teens on the internet.

I should note that this kind of thing does not just happen to teens and kids. With the rise of online dating, scammers have utilized this tactic to extort people of all ages.

From a legal standpoint, extorting or “sextorting” someone is a crime. However, most of these scammers are overseas and almost impossible to track.

That being said, some general rules of thumb are:

1) Don’t send identifying information or pictures to strangers (even if you spent a significant time talking to them and think they are legitimate).
2) Don’t send money
3) Report to the local FBI or local PD. While they may not be able to track a perpetrator, awareness needs to be raised on this issue.

Thought of the day: How much privacy should teenage children have or expect on their devices?

On the one hand, we want to cultivate trust and independence and respect our kids' space...but on the other, we also have a duty to protect them.

In employment world, if an employer is providing you with the computer, phone, etc., you don't necessarily have an expectation of privacy. They can look at your search history, read your emails, etc.

Should it be any different for kids and teenagers?

As a lawyer and mom, I use the classic "Notice" approach. My kids' are "on notice" that as long as their devices are being used in my house, under my supervision, or paid by me, I will have full access any time to review and audit content. How often I check and what apps I will allow depends on how much trust and good decision-making I have seen to date.

In our world today, where online presence can take a life of its own, I believe adults (parents, app creators, educators, etc.) have a duty to protect children using technology.

Sometimes, I choose to take a case because of its economic value...but sometimes, it really becomes about the moral value.

When a large healthcare employer blatantly fails to accommodate a mom at work, it isn't about dollars and cents. It's about women being able to find their place in the workplace. It's about moms being able to work without sacrificing their family.

Today - I took a case that has high moral value - because as a Woman and Mom, I need to hold employers accountable. As a lawyer, I get to!

As an attorney, we are trained to be analytical and unemotional about our cases and their facts, but sometimes, it is necessary to feel the pain clients feel in order to really get the job done right.

As I am sitting here reviewing client documents for one of my cases, I keep trying to hold back tears...because this is a family torn apart, a life taken, all because someone didn't take the time to care or do their job correctly.

Things like this shouldn't happen...but they do unfortunately.

Fighting for justice for people, even though it will never right every wrong, is what makes this calling worth while.
