Family members may have wildly divergent opinions of the fair market value of collectible assets that may lead to delays in your estate's settlement and ultimately lead to litigation. To get around such bleak outcomes, obtain appraisals for all your valuable collectibles while you're still living.

Younger Generations Can Help Older Ones With Estate Planning

How do you approach a conversation with your parents about estate planning? For sure, you don't want to nag or become a nuisance, creating suspicions about your motives. By being open and honest about your concerns, you can allay their fears that this is only about interest in their money. Talk about the opportunities they wish they had as children that they'd want their kids and grandkids to have — the stories or lessons they want their heirs to hear and advice about finances they want to pass down.

It's a good idea to chat with your parents about estate planning in a supportive and respectful way that supports their values and beliefs. Click through to learn how to ensure that all important documents, as well as necessary names and contact details, are prepared before it's too late.

Cultural Issues in Estate Planning

Every family will approach death and dying from a cultural perspective. Nevertheless, you have to prepare for the inevitable. For example, an elderly parent is relying on you for care and yet doesn't put documents in place to allow you to provide that care, the results of which can be tragic for everyone. However, it can be difficult to discuss death with your family if there's a cultural reluctance to do so. Younger family members may see the need for estate planning and legal documentation and want to help their parents, but don't want to seem presumptuous, like they're asking about their future inheritance. What to do?

In some cultures, it's not acceptable to talk about the end of life. This expectation can burden surviving family members when they're left to deal with the practical realities of estate planning. Click through for some advice on becoming socially aware of clients' different views.

Understanding Your Medicare Options

Many people do not realize that Medicare does not provide full health coverage. Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health care, but the coverage is subject to deductibles, coinsurance and other restrictions. Medicare Part B covers 80% of outpatient care and medically necessary supplies after you have met the deductible. For the 20% not covered by Medicare, you have options to purchase Medicare Supplement or Medigap (two different names for the same thing) insurance from a private company.

When you turn 65, unless you are covered by credible employer-sponsored health insurance, Medicare becomes your primary health insurance. However, Medicare doesn't cover all your health care expenses. Click through to review the different parts of Medicare and the supplemental insurance options avai...
