It’s easy to keep pushing it to next month, next year, or “when things slow down.” But estate planning doesn’t require your life to be perfectly organized before you begin.

You start with what you have, what matters to you, and the people you want to protect. The rest is what the planning process is there to help you work through.

Choosing who will be in charge of your estate isn’t just about picking the person you love or trust the most.

It’s a job.

The person you choose may need to manage assets, communicate with family members, follow legal instructions, keep records, and make decisions when emotions are already running high.

That takes organization, good judgment, and the ability to handle responsibility.

The right person can make your plan easier to carry out. The wrong person can make an already difficult situation much harder.

Choose the role based on who can handle it, not simply who expects to be chosen.

Most people know what they want because they’re carrying the whole picture in their head.

The problem is, your family can’t see what’s in your head.

Which accounts go where? Who handles what? What happens to the house? Who should make decisions if you can’t? Even small unanswered questions can become big sources of confusion when you’re not there to explain them.

That’s one reason estate planning matters. It turns what you know into clear instructions the people you love can actually follow.

So think about it: if you couldn’t explain things tomorrow, what would your family have the hardest time figuring out?

What happens when you don’t have a child, sibling, or close family member you feel comfortable naming to handle your estate?

More people are in that position than you might think.

In this conversation with Karen Schultz-Tarnopol from Heirloom Consulting Joe talks about one of the hardest parts of estate planning: choosing the person who will actually step in and handle things when you can’t.

Sometimes people name a neighbor, a friend, or someone close in age simply because they feel like they have no other option. But being trustworthy is only part of the equation. The person may also need the time, experience, organization, and emotional capacity to manage a very important job.

And if you don’t have someone who fits that role, there are professional options.

You should never feel embarrassed because your family structure looks different. The goal is not to force someone into the job. It’s to build a plan that will actually work when the time comes.

When someone sends a friend, family member, or client our way, that trust means a lot. We know they’re putting our name behind theirs.

So yes, we’ll joke around on here.

But when it comes to taking care of the people you send us, that part is never a joke.

Finding out at the closing table that there’s a problem with how your property is titled is terrible timing.

If your home is owned by a trust, there may be additional documentation the title company needs before the sale can close. Waiting until the last minute to figure that out can mean scrambling for documents or delaying the closing altogether.

So add this to your before-you-list checklist: pull your deed and confirm exactly how the property is titled.

If it’s held in a trust, deal with the paperwork early. Joe can review what you have, identify what may be needed, and help get things in order before everyone is sitting at the title company waiting to sign.

A little preparation now can prevent a very inconvenient surprise later.

Life changes. Your estate plan should be able to change with it.

Marriage, divorce, new grandchildren, a move, changes in finances, or simply different priorities can all mean that a plan you created years ago no longer reflects the life you have today.

Having documents in place is important. Having the right documents in place is what matters.

Take the time to review your plan periodically and make sure the people, decisions, and protections in it still match what you want now.

Because an outdated plan can create exactly the confusion you were trying to prevent.

Your adult children don’t need to know every detail of your finances.

But they should know where to start.

Where are the estate planning documents? Who should they call? Where is important financial information kept? Is there a trust, will, or power of attorney they need to know about?

When families are already dealing with a difficult situation, searching through drawers, emails, and filing cabinets only adds more stress.

A good plan should be organized enough that the people you trust can actually find it when they need it.
