Sometimes, your biggest supporters aren't the people closest to you. They're complete strangers who believe in what you're building.

And that's your reminder to KEEP SHOWING UP, KEEP PROMOTING, AND KEEP BUILDING.

Your audience is out there. They just haven't discovered you yet.

Just because an asset is in your name doesn't mean it's automatically yours in a divorce.

In Illinois, inherited money, gifts, and businesses owned before marriage may qualify as non-marital property. But mixing those assets with marital funds or using them for shared expenses can complicate how they're classified.

It's not just about what you owned before marriage. It's about what happened to it afterward.

Understanding the difference could make a significant impact on your financial future.

Your name is on the deed. But does that mean the house is yours after divorce?

Not necessarily.

When a marriage ends, deciding what happens to the family home can be one of the most complicated financial decisions.

And there's more to consider than whose name appears on the paperwork.

Depending on your circumstances, there are three potential options:

🔑 Sell the home and divide the proceeds.

🔑 Buy out your spouse's interest and keep the property.

🔑 Keep the home temporarily and agree to sell it later.

But here's something many people overlook: A divorce decree doesn't automatically remove someone from the mortgage.

Even if ownership changes, your responsibility for the loan may remain until the mortgage is refinanced, paid off, or the lender formally releases you.

Thinking about divorce? Don’t make this financial mistake. ⚠️

You might think moving money out of a joint account before your spouse does is a smart way to protect yourself.

But in Illinois, draining a joint account doesn’t automatically make that money yours.

And that decision could become a problem when it’s time to discuss what’s fair in your divorce settlement.

Thinking about moving out of state with your kids during a divorce? Read this first. ⚖️

A new job, a fresh start, or a better opportunity might seem like the right next step. But when children are involved, relocating isn't always as simple as packing your bags.

In Illinois, relocation comes with specific legal requirements, including distance thresholds, notice requirements, and potentially court approval.

And if the other parent objects? A judge may ultimately decide based on what's in your child's best interests, not what's most convenient for either parent.

Moving first and asking questions later could create serious complications for your case, including your future parenting time.

Before accepting that out-of-state opportunity or making relocation plans, understand your legal options.

In Illinois, there's a legal concept called dissipation, when marital assets are used for one spouse's sole benefit, for purposes unrelated to the marriage, while the marriage is undergoing an irretrievable breakdown.

And here's what matters: Once dissipation is properly raised, the spouse accused of spending the money must account for where it went with clear and convincing evidence.

But timing is critical. Illinois has specific notice requirements and limits on how far back a dissipation claim can reach.

Don't wait until it's too late to question where marital money went.

𝗪𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗞 𝗧𝗢 𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗬 𝗜𝗙 𝗜 𝗪𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗡?

After more than 20 years practicing law, I've noticed something that still amazes me. Some male attorneys speak to female attorneys in ways I seriously doubt they would ever speak to another man.

The condescending remarks. The raised voices. The attempts to intimidate. The talking over us. The assumption that being louder somehow makes them the better lawyer.

And here's my favorite part.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗵𝗲'𝘀 𝗮 "𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲". 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱, 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁, 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹, 𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹.

Funny how that works. I've been a prosecutor. I've practiced criminal defense. I've spent years litigating cases and advocating for clients whose lives are being turned upside down. I didn't get here by being intimidated. And I certainly didn't get here by allowing opposing counsel to mistake my kindness for weakness.

What I find particularly troubling is what happens when a woman finally pushes back. Suddenly, she's the one with the attitude.

𝗡𝗢, 𝗦𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦𝗡'𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗔𝗡 𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗕𝗟𝗘𝗠. 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗔 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗕𝗟𝗘𝗠 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗔 𝗪𝗢𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗪𝗛𝗢 𝗪𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗕𝗘 𝗣𝗨𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗.

Let me be clear. I respect strong advocacy. I respect attorneys who fight hard for their clients. I even respect opposing counsel who challenge me at every turn.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝘇𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆.

You don't have to like me. You don't have to agree with me. And you certainly don't have to back down from your position. But you will treat me with the same professional respect you would extend to a male attorney.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗱𝗼? 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺. 🙏

To those who don't? 𝗜𝗙 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗪𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗𝗡'𝗧 𝗦𝗔𝗬 𝗜𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗡, 𝗗𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗦𝗔𝗬 𝗜𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗠𝗘. Because I didn't spend more than two decades earning my seat at the table just to have someone question whether I belong there.

Parents come in braced for a custody war and ask how to win. The honest answer surprises them: the strongest position is built quietly, over months, in the ordinary moments.

Courts decide parenting issues on the best interests of the child, and the parent who shows steady, genuine involvement has an enormous advantage.

Save this if your children are the reason you are reading.
