Protected immigrants at risk of losing U.S. work permits. Hundreds of thousands of immigrants, mainly from Central America, are at risk of losing their work permits after negotiations with the Biden administration to extend them broke down this week, advocates said Wednesday.

More than 300,000 immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Nepal are seeking in federal court to extend their “temporary protected status,” or TPS, which most have held for decades. Immigrants’ lawyers and the Biden administration had been negotiating over the families’ status since June 2021, but talks collapsed Tuesday and lawyers said they are returning to court.

Sixty-eight percent, meanwhile, said crime is a "very important" issue, while 26% said it is only "somewhat important." And 59% of voters called immigration a "very important" issue while 31 % said it is "somewhat important." Abortion was ranked fourth in the new survey, with 55 % calling it a "very important issue" and 29 % saying it is "somewhat important."

Feds spent $131.8 million on technology so foreigners could self-report to immigration hearings. According to a new report published by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement about its Alternatives to Detention Program (ATD), the agency spent $361,218 a day on three kinds of technology to monitor those it released into the U.S.

The report states it spent $112,257.80 a day on GPS monitoring using satellites to track the location of foreign nationals released into the U.S. to ensure they were complying with the conditions of their release.

It spent $245,377.92 a day on 255,602 SmartLINK phones with an app for individuals to use facial recognition “to report compliance with the conditions of their release.”

It also spent $3,582.36 a day on 19,902 VoiceID telephonic reporting. This system compares phone calls made by the individuals against their voiceprint obtained during enrollment into the program.

New Biden program grants legal pathway to U.S. for thousands of Venezuelan migrants but what about all those that are already days and weeks on the way to the border? Many would argue that there should be a grace period to allow for the proper transition for this change.

The Biden administration announced a joint agreement with Mexico on Wednesday that overhauls how the U.S. accepts migrants from Venezuela, giving humanitarian parole to 24,000 while taking a hard-line approach to those who attempt to enter the country unlawfully.

The plan seeks to dissuade Venezuelans from making the long and dangerous trek across Central America and Mexico to the southern border in hopes of seeking asylum. Instead, they can apply for the program remotely then fly to the U.S., presumably from a neighboring country, as there are currently no flights from Venezuela to the U.S. out of safety concerns.

- Top Ten Immigration Tips! To ensure that you are afforded all of the rights of residency or citizenship in USA, follow these immigration tips.

1. Plan for delays in application and renewal processes. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is constantly behind schedule. Some applications can take up to three years to process.
2. Consider establishing citizenship in the USA. If you already have a green card, and are considering staying in the USA, file for U.S. citizenship as soon as the laws allow you.
3. Avoid summary removal. Summary removal refers to the power that border officials have to turn you away from entering the USA.
4. Notify USCIS of address changes. All immigrants who stay longer than thirty days must notify USCIS of any address changes.
5. File multiple immigration visa petitions. If you are applying for a green card or immigration visa through the petition of a family member, check if more than one of your family members is eligible to petition for you.
6. Be on time to every appointment with USCIS.
7. Do not violate any immigration visa provisions or laws.
8. Keep copies and stay current on the status of your application.
9. Conduct research from reliable sources.
10. Get help from legislators.

Appeals Court Sends DACA Case Back to Lower Court, Temporarily Protecting Dreamers. The ruling allows the program to go forward, but only for current DACA recipients known as Dreamers, not new applicants. A federal appeals court on Wednesday granted a temporary reprieve to hundreds of thousands of young immigrants enrolled in a program allowing them to work and study in the U.S. without fear of being deported, but it’s unclear how long it will last.

The ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals directs the lower court judge who found that the decade-old Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program was unlawful to take into consideration a new rule issued by the Biden administration.

The White House is discussing a push around immigration — after the midterms. The talks are happening within a small group of Biden aides, and the president hasn’t yet made any decisions, the sources said. The policy details of any immigration push, as well as its scale and scope, would depend on the makeup of Congress and the political climate, the people familiar with the discussions said.

Such a push reflects an acknowledgment among Biden’s advisers that as he prepares for a re-election campaign based on the slogan “Promises Kept,” immigration remains a 2020 campaign pledge that remains largely unfulfilled.

Don’t weaponize migrants for political sport. Enact humane, constructive immigration reform. Let’s face it: Our immigration system is as broken as our political and personal relationships. Clearly, we must do better. Without question, there is no Florida without immigrants. Their presence strengthens us financially and culturally, especially in Miami-Dade and South Florida. Likewise, we have no control over the differing challenges and political circumstances that have brought people to our shores and borders. In most cases, neither do they; many migrants arrive in our cities vulnerable and desperately seeking refuge from unsafe conditions. However, as they arrive, we have the opportunity to recognize our shared humanity, welcome them and embrace the diverse gifts and contributions they offer. Whether born in the United States or not, we recognize that all of us share similar fears and dreams. Our faith-based values remind us of this commonality. Notwithstanding, we recognize the importance of securing all our borders, not only for national security reasons, but also for the integrity of our immigration system. By acknowledging these tensions, we must elevate the urgency in balancing these needs.

DACA isn’t an option for thousands of immigrant children. Why so many are forced to leave. There has been a lot of political turmoil for recipients of DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Most recently, the Biden administration announced a plan to codify the program into law at the end of October. However, child immigrants “documented” through their parents’ work visas and green card applications are not eligible for the DACA program.

The short term solution is for Congress to fix the loophole through legislation while the long term should be for a closer inspection of the quotas for immigrants that haven’t changed since the 1990s and clear the backlog of green card applications.

No party is innocent when it comes to America’s lack of an immigration policy. Jonah Goldberg of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch believes that when it comes to the immigration mess we are in the middle of, both parties are at fault.

We have two parties dominated by voices that claim otherwise. On one side are the Republicans who agree it’s a problem, just not a very hard one. Simply build a wall, close the border and deport those who are here. On the other side are the Democrats, who have trouble admitting that immigration is a problem at all.

We got to this point because, about a decade ago, both parties decided it was in their interest to have the issue to rally around rather than solve the problem via some compromise. Both parties benefited from demonizing the other and both shared the same faulty assumption that Latinos were somehow destined to vote for Democrats. Both sides have preferred to exploit the dysfunction they caused. It's time to put aside the differences and come up with a fair and just immigration policy asap!

TPS for Central Americans expires soon. South Florida immigration advocates urge for their renewal. U.S. Temporary Protected Status expires for nationals from Haiti, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua this December, meaning they could be vulnerable to deportation back to their countries. The protections had been extended by 15 months last September.

Campaigners are also pushing for Guatemala to be covered under the TPS program.

Several immigrant advocacy groups in Florida gathered in front of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Miramar last week to call for immediate action from the federal government to make policy changes.
