Be careful when you post. As things heat up on the internet and especially social media, I would like to take a moment to caution everyone about libel and to be exceptionally cautious about shat you post. Libel is the publishing of an untrue statement that causes harm or damage to another (person or business). Posting on social media is publishing. Stating a position as fact (without confirming or understanding the whole situation and having the details wrong) likely makes it false. Making the post was likely done solely to call someone out and cause harm and if the person can prove harm or damages (lost business or opportunities count) the elements are met. You cannot simply delete a post. Someone has screen shot it. Worse, the original poster can be held accountable for the replies to his/her posts, especially if the post is set to public in the privacy settings. This means that the original
poster is now responsible for the content of people’s comments that the original poster cannot control at all (and just deleting may not work, see above). Libel is a serious civil matter. There are compensatory and special damages available and the victim has one year to raise a claim. Worse many times a call to the public can result in criminal activity against someone or potentially the post could be deemed cyber bullying which is a crime. Now this civil matter has become a criminal matter. Post carefully and thoughtfully.
