WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD MISSES TOO MANY DAYS OF SCHOOL?

Today, Taequan Kates, Director of LASEV'S Disability Rights Unit, discusses truancy and the potential legal consequences if your child has too many unexcused absences. We'll review the meaning because unexcused versus excused absences and give some general examples of solutions that may be offered by your school to help your child get back into the classroom. All school systems are different, so it's important to check your district's policies or speak with an attorney if you have concerns about truancy. Save this video, share it with another parent and check out our other videos on this page to learn more about your student's rights at school!

Our Disability Rights Unit is taking over LASEV's social media pages to get parents and students up to speed on their legal rights this Back to School season. Our office provides FREE legal services to qualifying Virginians in matters such as education, family law, public benefit denials and more. WHAT CAN I DO AS A PARENT IF MY CHILD IS BEING BULLIED AT SCHOOL?

Today, Taequan Kates, Director of LASEV'S Disability Rights Unit, discusses the steps parents can take when requesting an investigation into a bullying incident or filing a complaint regarding bullying in school. Bullying is more than just ordinary teasing or peer conflict. It's a series of actions intended to intimidate another student and it can cause serious trauma, affect a student's grades or their ability to attend school at all. SUCCESS STORIES FROM LEGAL AID!

Our client, a single mother of three children, suffered a medical emergency while driving and hit another resident's car. Her complex, rather than express sympathy and support, filed to evict her. LASEV's Strategic Litigation Attorney Evan Carcerano worked with our client's neurologist to file for a reasonable accommodation, which was ignored by the complex. On behalf of our client, LASEV filed a fair housing counterclaim. In exchange for dismissing the fair housing matter, opposing counsel agreed to dismiss the unlawful detainer, allowing our client to stay in her home.
