Immigration Policies Weigh on Indian Workers Seeking Green Cards
By Laura D. Francis

Hundreds of thousands of immigrants, mainly from India, may never get their green cards. Now some are losing their temporary work visas while waiting.

That’s not just bad news for the workers. It also affects employers, mostly in high-tech industries, who say they have demonstrated they need high-skilled foreign workers.

The situation is an outgrowth of a decadeslong backlog in green cards combined with tough new U.S. immigration policies that implement a 2017 executive order directing the government to ensure that businesses prioritize the hiring of U.S. workers.

AILA’s “Invisible Wall” Report Sheds Light on Trump Administration Policies to Restrict Legal Immigration

- The travel bans and extreme vetting directives that halt or delay immigration without any justification beyond vague references to national security;
- Policies restricting the admission of temporary skilled workers and entrepreneurs to the United States, impacting American businesses and slowing economic growth;
- The termination of programs for compelling populations, sowing fear and confusion among thousands of individuals who have resided in the U.S. for decades;
- The imposition of hurdles to naturalization for foreign-born soldiers, which are unnecessary and ignore the needs of the U.S. military; and
- The growing backlog of immigration benefits applications, increasing processing times, and increasing fees, along with a decreasing focus on stakeholder input and customer service.

Judge Denies Preliminary Injunction, Preserving DACA For Now

August 31, 2018
Today, Judge Hanen declined to issue a preliminary injunction halting DACA. "The Court did not grant the preliminary injunction as it found that the States had delayed seeking this relief for years, that the balance of private interests fell in favor of the denial of the requested relief, and that implementing the relief at this point in time was contrary to the best interests of the public."
