BCIP and CPCS IP are celebrating the exoneration of our former client Elvio Marrero! His erroneous murder conviction was vacated by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and he was freed in 2024 after 28 years of wrongful imprisonment. Despite flight records and DNA evidence contradicting the false testimony used to convict him in 1996, the prosecution subjected him to a retrial. This week a Franklin County jury correctly found Mr. Marrero not guilty of the crime. https://recorder.com/2026/06/17/greenfield-man-acquitted-murder/ Congratulations to Boston College Law School BC Defender Clinic Director Steve Van D**e and Attorney Mike Hussey for their tremendous victory in the retrial exonerating Mr. Marrero! We are so grateful to Mayor Michelle Wu 吳弭 for recognizing that "wrongful convictions are an injustice that robs an innocent person of their life, liberty, and dignity and has an immeasurable personal, familial, emotional, and societal cost," through this official proclamation commemorating in the City of Boston and honoring the important work of New England Innocence Project, including The Exoneree Network, the CPCS Innocence Program, and Boston College Innocence Program.

Wrongful convictions stole James Carver's freedom and separated him from his family for over three decades. Healing and the struggle for justice continue, but today we are honored to witness the reversal of his erroneous convictions, his freedom, and his joyful reunion with his loved ones.

It took collaborative persistence by the innocence programs of BC Law and the CPCS to win James Carver’s freedom.

We are elated for Mr. Carver and his family! We are grateful to have collaborated with CPCS in his long quest for justice. And we celebrate the court's holding that convictions undermined by science cannot be final.

The man convicted of starting a devastating 1984 rooming-house fire in Beverly that claimed the lives of 15 and spurred statewide safety reforms has been granted a new trial.

We gather to honor the survivors of wrongful conviction and their loved ones and to learn about how innocent people are erroneously convicted of crimes they did not commit and what we can do to remedy and prevent these injustices.

Please join us on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, as advocates, legislators, exonerees, and community members gather at the Massachusetts State House to commemorate Wrongful Conviction Day, an international day of awareness dedicated to highlighting the causes, remedies, and emotional tolls of wrongful conviction.

In honor of this year’s theme, "The Pursuit of Truth," which underscores the ongoing efforts to shed light on wrongful convictions, we will advocate for much-needed reforms to ensure the criminal legal system protects the innocent and prevents these life-altering mistakes.

Following the State House event, we will march to City Hall, raising our voices together against injustice in honor of loved ones who are still incarcerated. No RSVP necessary to join.
