Newport to Enforce Visitor Quarantine Edict

Newport Police will be out in force this weekend to remind out-of-staters that they must quarantine for 14 days.

Visitors staying in a second home must stay inside housing or in their cars if they are only coming for the weekend.

Police will be posted at the three bridge access points into Newport, reminding visitors, especially those with out-of-state license plates, to adhere to the quarantine edict.

“If you come to your [second] home on the weekend, you are supposed to quarantine,” City Manager Joe Nicholson said. “You are not supposed to be out on the streets, going to a coffeehouse, getting takeout or taking a drive on a nice Saturday.”

Nicholson fielded numerous complaints about visitors who were out and about last Saturday, the first nice weekend day of spring. This weekend is also supposed to bring good weather.

“If you see people who arrive from out-of-state out of their cars, call the police,” he said. “Make that complaint and a police officer will deliver the notice of quarantine and admonishment.”
