Hundreds of thousands of booking photos are set to vanish from a Wake County, N.C. website, the latest in a national push to protect people whose charges are dropped or cleared.

Backers say the limits avoid saddling arrestees with a digital scarlet letter that can cause lasting harm in employment and housing even after an acquittal or dismissal.

Mug shots often appear on a page that catalogs local mug shots with names, ages, arrest dates and charges.

Commenters regularly mock arrestees. One recent post, which showed a 40-year-old man accused of providing armed security without proper registration, drew more than 100 comments, most making fun of his wandering right eye.

Transparency advocates counter that sharing mug shots can help solve crimes, vet claims of police abuse and avoid confusion when a person has a common name.

Katheryn Zughbi of Rocky Mount, N.C., runs a different page called Fighting Crime News and Who’s Wanted.

“I feel like it’s giving the criminals more rights than the people,” she said.
