If you are helping an elderly friend or relative with getting documents notarized, double check that they have a valid ID.
A government issued driver’s license, passport, senior ID, or identification card must be either unexpired or issued within the last 5 years of the signing date.
If they don’t have an ID, 2 witnesses must be present at the notary appointment and must swear the following:
1. They personally know the signer.
2. The signer does not have access to ID.
3. The signer is the person named on the document.
4. They (witnesses) do not have a beneficial interest in the document.
The two witnesses must also have an unexpired ID with them to show the Notary.
