New Jersey faces a shortage of 200,000 to 250,000 affordable homes. A minimum-wage worker earning $15.49 an hour must work 86 hours a week to afford a one-bedroom apartment at fair market rent. The burden falls especially hard on communities of color, where the racial wealth gap between white families and Black and Brown families exceeds $600,000.
