New Jersey is in a film renaissance right now.

Film started in Jersey, left for Hollywood, and now it’s coming back.

About 20 years ago, I saw the potential in where things could eventually go, which is why I took both the New Jersey and New York bar exams together as I pursued entertainment law.

Now watching studios expand, productions pour into the state, and New Jersey position itself as a serious force in film and television… full circle.

This is an incredible time to be in the entertainment industry, especially film, if you’re in Jersey.

The road to becoming an entertainment lawyer is not easy but once you get there, it's awesome!

A lot of people in music still don’t understand how music actually makes money.

It’s all about the publishing rights.

That’s why, almost 30 years after Tupac’s death, Daz Dillinger can still sue Tupac’s estate over royalties.

An artist’s estate can keep making money long after they’re gone because of the power of copyright.

Understanding copyright and knowing your rights is half the battle in music.

Hollywood lesson of the day: changing the names and throwing a disclaimer at the end of the movie may not always save you. 😬

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s film The Rip is now facing a lawsuit from officers who allegedly believe the movie portrayed them closely enough for people to identify them.

This is where entertainment law, filmmaking, and business strategy all collide.

Sometimes the question isn’t just “Can we make the movie?”

The better question is:
“Should we clear the rights before somebody recognizes themselves on screen?” 👀

A lot of creators build together without ever discussing ownership clearly.

Everybody is excited in the beginning.
Nobody wants to have “awkward” business conversations.

Then the project starts making money…

…and suddenly the paperwork matters.

Creative partnerships need structure early, not after problems begin.

People see moments.
What they don’t always see is the mindset behind the moment.

Back in 2013, I attended a BAFTA New York event for the cast of Mad Men through my membership with New York Women in Film & Television.

That night changed something for me.

I realized BAFTA had a New York chapter, and I quietly made a decision that one day I would become a member.

Not because someone handed me access.
Not because I had everything figured out.
But because I understood the importance of proximity, relationships, and positioning yourself in the environments you ultimately want to grow into.

I didn’t apply immediately. I waited three years.

I kept building.
Kept learning.
Kept moving within the entertainment space.
And eventually, I leveraged the relationships and credibility I had already built through NYWIFT to become a BAFTA member in 2016.

A lot of people think manifestation is just vision boards and affirmations.

But manifestation also looks like:
• showing up before you feel fully ready
• getting in the room
• building relationships
• staying consistent
• and positioning yourself for the opportunity before the opportunity arrives

Sometimes the first step is simply allowing yourself to see what’s possible.

One thing being around the entertainment industry taught me is that talent alone is not enough.

At some point, creators have to learn business, ownership, relationships, structure, and longevity.

The people who survive long term usually understand that creativity without protection can become vulnerability.

That lesson applies far beyond entertainment.
