Join us on 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟕, 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟏–𝟑 𝐏𝐌 for a free, hands-on workshop exploring Air Pruned Raised Beds (APRBs), an innovative method for growing young trees in urban environments.⁣
⁣
Led by Connor Youngerman of Cornell Small Farms alongside the Bronx River Foodway team, this workshop builds on our April session. Participants will learn how to harvest and transplant saplings, prepare raised beds for winter, and explore how APRBs can support urban forestry in NYC.⁣

Join upcoming tree planting days on Saturday October 17th in Yonkers, Tuesday October 20th at Soundview Park, and Tuesday October 27th in Muskrat Cove!

Help restore native habitat that protects the Bronx River, cleans our air, and cools our neighborhoods in the summer. You can sign up by visiting our events calendar at bronxriver.org/calendar

Please wear clothing appropriate for outdoor weather and gardening/cleaning activities. We also recommend bringing a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated. Water and snacks will be provided. All gloves and tools needed will also be provided.

We are hiring for: an Education Coordinator and an Education Associate!

These roles are essential in creating opportunities for the community to understand and appreciate the ecological and social history of the Bronx River. Apply now to join the education team!

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, earlier applications will be prioritized.

The Education Coordinator is responsible for leading educational programming on the Bronx River and promoting the Bronx River as an educational resource for schools and community organizations. They will also build and maintain relationships with formal and informal educators in schools and community organizations, and incorporate the river into their programming.

The Education Associate supports the Education Coordinator. The primary responsibility of the Education Associate is co-leading education programming, including curriculum planning and lessons for the Bronx River EELS internship, and field trips to the river.

Join us on November 7, 12–4 PM at Concrete Plant Park for the 5th Annual Community Banquet, a grassroots celebration of the plants and people of the Bronx River! 🌿

Join partners, neighbors, and friends for FREE wild food and drink tastings, herbalism, educational workshops, art, music, and more as we share lessons from the past year and reconnect with the land.

What began as the culminating event for the Edible Banquet workshop series has grown into an annual Bronx River Alliance tradition that celebrates the Bronx River Foodway and explores our communities’ connection to land and food.

Trash can travel from our streets to the Bronx River—and all the way to the ocean. You can help stop it. 💧

Floating trash pollutes waterways and harms wildlife. Trash booms help catch it before it travels farther, reducing the debris that can reach Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.

These floating barriers capture trash at the water’s surface, while an underwater skirt catches debris just below. A weighted chain keeps the skirt in position, with space underneath for aquatic life to pass through.

There are four trash booms along the Bronx River: in White Plains, Tuckahoe, Muskrat Cove, and Concrete Plant Park.

At Concrete Plant Park, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection manages the boom and routinely removes captured trash using a skimmer vessel—a specialized boat that collects plastic waste and other debris with equipment such as conveyor belts and nets.

You can help keep trash from reaching the river in the first place:

🗑️ Secure your trash so loose items can’t blow or wash away.
🥤 Choose reusable cups, bottles, and containers whenever possible.
🤝 Join a local cleanup to help remove litter before it travels downstream.

Join the Bronx River Ecology Team on Tuesday, Oct 6 at 5:30pm for a special guest presentation from EPA Region 2 researchers. The researchers will be presenting their findings from a 2025 pollution study on the Bronx River which looked at 6PPD-Quinone, a toxic chemical released by vehicle tires that can harm freshwater ecosystems.

The presentation will take place on Zoom and will last about 45 minutes followed by Q&A. Anyone interested in Bronx River ecology and freshwater ecosystem health is encouraged to tune in 🦦

About 60% of the trash we collected from the Bronx River this year was Styrofoam. You can help change that. 💧

Lightweight and easily carried by wind and rain, polystyrene foam—commonly called Styrofoam—can reach the Bronx River, Long Island Sound, and the ocean. It breaks apart into microplastics that pollute the water and harm wildlife.

NYC’s foam ban took effect on January 1, 2019. Stores and food vendors cannot offer, sell, or possess single-use foam clamshell containers, cups, plates, bowls, trays, or coolers. Selling foam packing peanuts is also prohibited.

Exceptions include food containers filled and sealed before reaching the business; containers for raw meat, poultry, fish, or seafood sold from butcher cases or similar displays; and protective foam blocks used in shipping.

Take action to help protect our river:

🗑️ Secure loose foam in a tightly tied trash bag so it can’t blow away.

🥤 Choose reusable cups and containers when possible, and ask businesses for alternatives to foam.

📞 Report suspected violations to 311. Provide the business name, location, and type of product. Businesses violating the ban can face fines.
