These are all good, safe targets to aim for when starting your own biz.

HOWEVER, there is still something to be said for jumping into the deep end and being forced to swim ... or sink.

Leaving your day job before your startup is earning sufficient revenue is a really, really bad idea.

The IRS does provide an outlet to answer important tax questions you might have. The problem? There is only a 3.5 month window for you to ask those questions. And picking up the phone to call the IRS is kinda like going to the beach without packing any sunscreen (i.e. "I probably know what's gonna happen here but maybe it won't be that bad"). Although touted as a "toll-free" service, the over-the-phone option is often hard to navigate, and can lead to frustrating hold times. So what's an alternative?

SOLUTION: Work with a human. One you know and trust.

You can call us right this second with any questions you might have. Important tax questions arise throughout the year ... not 3.5 months at a time.

Big tax deadline coming up on Friday, March 1 for farmers and fishermen:

File Form 1040 and pay any tax due. However, you have until Apr. 15 to file if you paid your 2018 estimated tax payments by Jan. 15 this year. Contact us with any question or for last-minute help.

This is a bit self-serving, but it needs to be said: Be very careful entrusting your tax preparation to software. We can't tell you how many returns we've corrected over the years, in which the money "saved" by not using a pro was MUCH less than what we were able to find unclaimed within the returns.

Just a thought for you with tax season in full swing...

If you receive suspicious IRS-related scam or phishing emails, you can protect your identity (and probably save another's) by forwarding them immediately to [email protected]. Pass it on!

We thought these tax write-offs were very savvy (or ridiculous, depending on your point of view).

Your fellow taxpayers have successfully claimed write-offs for many things that most of us wouldn't even imagine, ranging from cat food to the airplane they use to keep tabs on their condo.

Under the TCJA, working men and women who are not incorporated, like farmers, might be liable to excess business loss limitations. Excess business losses are total deductions attributable to trades or businesses exceeding total gross income and gains plus $250,000.

Translation: This means you might not be able to claim as many losses as in years past.
