For the third year in a row Bailey Duquette P.C. is honored to be participating in the Lawyer’s Cup, a hockey tournament featuring many of the leading law firms in New York City. The tournament raises money for Ice Hockey in Harlem, a non-profit organization with the mission to improve the physical and educational well-being of underprivileged children in the Harlem community.

The Lawyer’s Cup began as a competition between law firms with close ties to the National Hockey League (NHL): Proskauer Rose, the former law firm of NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, would play an annual game against Skadden Arps, the former law firm of NHL Deputy Commissioner and Chief Legal Officer Bill Daly. In recent years the field has expanded. This year, in addition to Proskauer Rose and Skadden Arps, Bailey Duquette will be competing against its “peer” firms David Polk, Kaye Scholer, Weil Gotschal, Winston & Strawn, and Stikeman Elliot. Those familiar with the New York legal market are perhaps calling to mind the Sesame Street song “One of these things (is not like the others).” While we may be smaller than those other firms, we have proven (through the generosity of our friends and clients) to be their equal in fundraising. In each of the last two years, we have “lost” the fundraising competition at the 11th hour due to a last minute donation from one of the big firms. It is safe to say that our ability to raise money for Ice Hockey in Harlem is what keeps us getting invited back.

As many of you have been very generous in the past – and the year seems to have flown by – we are reluctant to seek your donations again. Bailey Duquette will be competing again in the Lawyer's Cup hockey tournament, this Saturday March 14. Our first game is at 11:45, with games all day until 8 p.m. We encourage you to come watch. There will be a reception at the Sky Rink for all the teams and their fans afterwards. The tournament raises money for Ice Hockey in Harlem, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the social and academic well-being of children in New York City through participation in hockey. What began as a game between Proskauer and Skadden has evolved into a full-fledged tournament raising tens of thousands of dollars for a youth hockey organization that brings hockey to Harlem.

The firm will be taking on a number of legal Goliaths – including Skadden Arps, Weil Gotshal, and Proskauer Rose -- in the 7th Annual Lawyers’ Cup hockey tournament at Chelsea Piers.

The Lawyers’ Cup was initially conceived as a game between Proskauer Rose, the former law firm of NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and Skadden Arps, the former law firm of NHL Deputy Commissioner and Chief Legal Officer, Bill Daly. Commissioner Bettman awards the Lawyer’s Cup to the winner.

The tournament raises money for Ice Hockey in Harlem, a non-profit organization that helps young children mature through hockey. You can read more about the organization at its website:

We are pleased to announce that Jamie H. Sklar has joined Bailey Duquette as a Partner. His addition to Bailey Duquette constitutes a strategic expansion of the firm’s corporate transactions practice.

Jamie represents companies and investment funds in a broad range of corporate and commercial matters with a particular focus on M&A, fund formation and financing transactions. Before joining Bailey Duquette, Jamie served as a senior in-house lawyer at Strategic Value Partners, a multi-billion dollar registered investment manager of a global distressed/restructuring hedge fund and five global distressed/restructuring private equity funds. He had previously practiced at White & Case LLP and Sidley Austin LLP.

Jamie’s experience includes an extensive list of M&A and private equity representations in the telecomunications, manufacturing, energy, infrastructure, transportation, healthcare, technology and banking sectors as well as equity and debt financings, distressed debt and loan to-own investments and equipment finance transactions. Jamie has an MBA as well as two law degrees (common and civil law) and brings to his practice a solid grounding in finance, operations, strategy and tax. He has a deep understanding of the dynamics of private investment funds and the legal, compliance and business issues they address daily. As an entrepreneur and lawyer, he is well equipped as a legal and business advisor to start-ups and existing businesses alike.
