Yesterday, Liston Abramson LLP attorneys Catherine A. Christian and Gina Kim secured an important appellate victory for our client John Krouskoff, a retired school district administrator, in his breach of contract action against the Clarkstown Central School District.

Mr. Krouskoff brought the case after the District failed to honor its contractual agreement to pay 85% of annual health insurance premiums following his completion of five years of full-time, continuous employment.

After the District moved for summary judgment, Mr. Krouskoff cross-moved for summary judgment, relying on the clear and unambiguous language of the parties’ agreement. Justice Larry J. Schwartz, Supreme Court, County of Rockland, granted Mr. Krouskoff’s cross-motion and the District appealed.

Yesterday, the Appellate Division, Second Department, affirmed Justice Schwartz’s decision, holding that the District’s “reading of the employment contract is inconsistent with ordinary principles of contract interpretation, as the District seeks to add terms that are not stated or implied.”

Yesterday, a Manhattan jury delivered a unanimous verdict holding a former diplomat accountable for sexual assault.

The jury found that Eugene Richard Gasana—former Rwandan Permanent Representative to the United Nations and President of the UN Security Council—raped our client, Benita Uruhisho, and the jury awarded her $5 million in damages.

This case required years of litigation and extraordinary courage on the part of our client. Ms. Uruhisho faced not only the trauma of the underlying abuse but also, as the evidence at trial demonstrated, efforts by the defense to publicly attack her credibility and reputation and intimidate potential witnesses in the case.

We are deeply honored to have represented Ms. Uruhisho. No verdict can erase the harm she has suffered. But this verdict sends a clear message: even powerful individuals can be held accountable.
