Thank you to and for balancing New York City’s budget. I applaud your efforts to install better efficiency in government and to eliminate waste. I applaud reducing some of the breaks afforded to some at the expense of others. I am equally delighted that this proves that it was not necessary to raise real estate taxes, income taxes or corporate taxes and you acknowledged that New York City taxpayers are already the HIGHEST TAXED IN THE WORLD. The biggest chunk of dollars came from an uncomfortable truth most New Yorkers don’t know: New York City taxpayers - ALL taxpayers, rich, poor and middle class - send about $21 BILLION more to the State than the state spends on New York City. While we are a generous bunch and are mostly happy to support/subsidize others in the state (including some very rich people upstate I assume?) we would like to know why the remaining $16 billion could not be spent on NYC either to improve services or reduce taxes? I don’t like the new pied a TERRE tax as I think it will net less income and result in multiple lawsuits based on implementation. Now what can we do to encourage jobs and wage growth? ALSO: if you freeze rents for some but not others is that fair? If you freeze rents will you also freeze those real estate taxes, insurance rates and repairs/maintenance costs, not to mention labor costs? Many New Yorkers are asking: if we have had rent controls, rent stabilization and freezes for DECADES, why do we have the highest rents IN THE WORLD? Why has that not worked and if we have hard evidence that it does not work, why are repeating failed policies? Let’s enact solutions that WORK not political talking points that feel good to some, but fail them the most!

NY wants and needs more tax dollars, but if we are already spending the most per public school pupil IN THE WORLD - paid by all taxpayers, rich, middle class and poor - why don’t we have the best schooling in the world? Why more money if we know spending tons is not delivering the results? Why if we have rent controls, rent freezes, rent stabilization ALREADY for decades do we have the most expensive housing? Time to ask ALL politicians tougher questions. Lots of promises, little delivery. Tons of spending, but where exactly is this tax money going? ALL taxpayers would like to know.

The biggest townhouse signed contract this week highlights just how much taxes the rich in New York City pay…. Already! Millions. This contradicts the false and misleading narrative that suggest they don’t.
