Can the U.S. Government Cancel a Passport or Citizenship? Here’s the Difference.

Yes — the U.S. Department of State has the legal authority to issue, limit, or revoke a U.S. passport, even for a naturalized citizen.

A passport can be revoked if it was obtained through fraud or false statements, if the person is subject to a federal arrest warrant, certain court orders, or national security concerns.

But here’s the key distinction many people misunderstand:

A passport is a travel document.
It is not the same thing as citizenship.

The State Department cannot revoke U.S. citizenship, even for someone who naturalized.

Only a federal court can take citizenship away, through a legal process called denaturalization, and the government must meet a very high burden of proof.

Important to know:
• Losing a passport does not automatically mean losing citizenship
• Passport revocation can be a warning sign of serious legal scrutiny

Citizenship Can Be Revoked for Immigration Fraud — Even Years Later

U.S. citizenship is strong, but it is not untouchable if it was obtained through fraud or willful misrepresentation.

Under federal law, the government may revoke (denaturalize) citizenship if it proves that a person:
• Lied or hid material facts during the immigration or naturalization process
• Used false documents
• Entered a fraudulent marriage
• Concealed criminal history
• Gave false testimony to obtain an immigration benefit

⚠️ Key point:
There is no statute of limitations. Denaturalization can occur years or even decades later if the fraud is discovered.

🇺🇸 In the United States, there is NO active draft right now.
The U.S. military is all-volunteer. However, the law DOES allow conscription if Congress and the President authorize it.

Key points you should know:
✔️ The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the power to raise an army
✔️ The Military Selective Service Act allows a draft only if activated
✔️ Registration ≠ being drafted

Who must register for Selective Service?
🔹 Men ages 18–25
🔹 This includes U.S. citizens and many non-citizens (green card holders, refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented immigrants)

Who does NOT have to register (as of now):
🔹 Women
🔹 Active-duty service members
🔹 Certain individuals with disabilities

Important for immigrants:
Failure to register (when required) can affect:

❗ Federal student aid
❗ Certain government jobs

There are also legal protections for conscientious objectors based on religious or moral beliefs.
