"Serving as the treasurer of the Student Bar Association has definitely had the biggest impact on me. I’ve really appreciated the opportunity to help almost every student organization on campus through this role and to advocate for all my peers, and I continue to be amazed by how much work and programming our student groups get done. It also reminds me of the fiscal work I was doing before law school as a legislative budget analyst for the New York State Assembly’s Ways and Means Committee and the ethos that 'our budget is our values.' There’s something very special about working with amazing people and putting funds toward their highest uses that I hadn’t realized I missed so much!"

“I knew the moment the jury pool walked in.”

That’s what prosecutor Gregory Waples told CNN legal analyst Elliot Williams about the Bernhard Goetz trial. Williams joined NYU Law professor Erin Murphy today for a conversation with students about his new book, Five Bullets.

In 1984, Goetz shot four Black teenagers on a New York subway car. The case split the city and became known as the first major true-crime story of the cable news era. Williams shared the jury selection detail that sealed the outcome: of the 12 jurors seated, six had been victims of crime, and three had been victimized on the subway.

The conversation covered race, reasonableness, the media, and how a single case shaped debates that persist 40 years later.

Building something new is hard. Building it with the right resources, the right network and a community behind you is a whole lot easier. 💜

This week, the NYU Law startup community came together for the 4th annual NYU Law Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Program (EVC) Fall Showcase, bringing together students and alumni at every stage of their ventures to celebrate what our founders have accomplished and rally behind what they’re building next.

One presenter, Cassandre Davilmar, the founder behind Lakou Cafe, took the stage to share lessons learned after eight years of building. “It can be really confusing to watch someone leave law to pursue entrepreneurship, especially after graduating from a top school like NYU Law. But it is clear that EVC sees that the future is increasingly entrepreneurial, and that supporting, investing in, and nurturing our whole community builds a stronger ecosystem.”

That belief is why NYU Law is the only top law school with its own venture fund. We don’t just cheer on our founders; we invest in them. 🚀

It started with a color TV, a summer in Mississippi, and a Saturday brunch. 📺☀️🥞

Three groups of NYU Law alumni from the classes of ‘83, ‘95, and ‘07 look back on the 1L friendships that turned out to be among of the most meaningful things they got out of law school. Decades later, those friendships have formed the basis of 41 years of ski trips, the foundation of a nonprofit, and even a spreadsheet tracking visits to of every apple orchard they’ve visited. 🍎

"Becoming a lawyer was a late decision for me. I had intended to become a teacher until halfway through my junior year of college...However, during my first placement as a student teacher, I discovered that the students I wanted to support were often absent from the classroom...Although I am proud of the positive impact I was able to have on my students’ lives, I felt that my influence was limited by policy and structural barriers that I could not control as a teacher. This realization led me to pursue law school, hoping to address the broader policies that I believed most affected my vulnerable students."
