Breast Cancer and Second Opinions
By: Ashley

Actress and singer Rita Wilson, who has recently undergone a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer, is crediting her road to recovery to getting a second opinion. According to a poll conducted in 2005, only 44 percent of people ever considered getting a second opinion from their doctor, and only three percent did so always.

Wilson stated, “I share this to educate others that a second opinion is critical to your health. You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found, which does happen. Early diagnosis is key.”

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women. Early detection is crucial because the disease is easier to treat and there is a larger chance of full recovery. While hereditary factors cannot be avoided, preventive steps can still be taken. Women should continue to have regular check ups with their doctors and always inquire about signs and symptoms of breast cancer. Though second opinions may seem unnecessary to some women, second opinions have saved other women’s lives. Always get a second opinion when it comes to your health, especially if it involves breast cancer.

Liver Cancer
By: Ashley

On April 9th, 2015, Gregg M. Kander won a $5.7 million jury verdict for medical malpractice. He was the husband of Ellen Weiss Kander, who died of liver cancer on June 5, 2012 at a young age. Mr. Kander’s attorney “argued that the defendants failed to properly diagnose a lesion on Ms. Kander’s liver”and he stated, “It could have been surgically removed for a complete cure.”

According to the American Cancer Society, though the average age of diagnosis of liver cancer is 63, more than 95 percent of people diagnosed with liver cancer are 45 years of age or older. Signs and symptoms of liver cancer often come in the later stages of the disease, which is why liver cancer is not frequently detected early.

By reducing exposures to known risk factors for this disease such as alcohol and to***co use and unprotected s*x, many liver cancers could be prevented. Do not wait to ask your doctor questions about preventing liver cancer. Take care of your body and take precautions now.
