NYC Strengthens Legionnaires’ Disease Safety Measures
Following a tragic Legionnaires’ disease outbreak on Manhattan’s Upper East Side that sickened 94 people and claimed 11 lives, NYC is strengthening cooling-tower oversight and enforcement. The new measures aim to improve safety monitoring and help prevent future outbreaks. Strong prevention and maintenance measures are essential to protecting public health.
The 11 deaths top the total number of deaths in a similar outbreak in Harlem in 2025, when seven people lost their lives.
