BREAKING: Republican Congressman Says Homosexuality Has No Place in America
Tennessee Republican Andy Ogles marked the start of Pride Month the way MAGA extremists tend to do things: with a slur dressed up as a statement. On Tuesday, Ogles posted to social media that "homosexuality has no place in America," capping it off with a sarcastic "Happy Nuclear Family Month."
This is not the first time Ogles has used his platform to attack an entire group of Americans. Back in March, he posted that "Muslims don't belong in American society," calling pluralism a lie. There is a pattern here, and it is not subtle.
The reaction came fast and from all directions. New York Times congressional correspondent Annie Karni called it "an extreme statement even by deep red state standards." Longtime Hill reporter Brian Metzger noted with dry humor that Ogles had greeted him personally in the Capitol tunnels many times, apparently unaware Metzger is gay. And Semafor's Dave Weigel pointedly shared the post alongside a photo of Scott Bessent, Trump's own Treasury Secretary, who is openly gay.
Ogles represents a wing of the Republican Party that has stopped pretending. No coded language, no dog whistles. Just open hostility toward LGBTQ Americans, toward Muslim Americans, toward anyone who does not fit the narrow, exclusionary vision of the country they want to build.
Pride Month just started. Ogles just reminded everyone exactly what is at stake.
