I grew up in New York City raised by Immigrant parents from Honduras. In the 7th grade, I dreamed of becoming a lawyer after reading a story on Thurgood Marshall. That same school year, I was given an assignment to write an essay about my career aspirations. I was thrilled to write the essay about becoming a lawyer. I turned the essay in and got the usual red check on the top right hand corner. However, the teacher asked to see me after class. The teacher said the essay was good but stated that I should become a police officer instead. I gave the teacher a puzzled look but the teacher insisted that I would become a great police officer. I went home deflated and unmotivated. I continued my academic career without a clear end-goal in mind. It was not until I took an elective law course at Mercy College that I began to regain an interest in law. The course led me to taking more undergraduate law electives. The renewed drive led me to Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School. I worked as a Youth Specialist at a nonprofit while attending law school where I assisted refugee youth adjust to their new lives in America. I often encouraged each young person I met to pursue their dreams regardless of the naysayers. These experiences have led me to pursue Immigration Law to help those pursue and achieve the American Dream.
