The Tarawa Terrace water treatment plant at Camp Lejeune is perhaps the clearest example among Camp Lejeune's 8 different water treatment plants of a long-term toxic source of contaminated drinking water. Of approximately 14 in-ground water wells that supplied that particular water treatment plant with untreated groundwater, the well identified by government inspectors as “TT 26” was located approximately 900 feet downward from ABC 1 Hour Dry Cleaners.
For decades, ABC 1 Hour Dry Cleaners (across the street from Camp Lejeune) allowed their toxic dry cleaning chemical waste fluids to flow directly into the building’s floor drains or into the ground. The drycleaners was designated as a SuperFund site by the EPA and ultimately destroyed and fenced off. Human exposure to that dry cleaning chemical waste is linked to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, kidney disease and serious liver issues.
