For our 10th anniversary, we’re distilling a decade of practice into 10 simple lessons.

Over the years, we’ve seen how much time and care employers put into designing benefit programs — and how often that effort gets lost if the plan isn’t communicated clearly.

Employee benefits aren’t just legal documents or compliance exercises. They’re promises. When participants understand how their benefits work and what they can rely on, trust grows. When they don’t, confusion and frustration follow, even in well-intentioned plans.

Lesson #6: Benefits work best when people understand them. The most effective benefit programs balance technical precision with plain-English communication.

The takeaway: Clarity isn’t just “nice to have.” It’s what turns good benefits into meaningful benefits.

In a recent episode of Be More Than a Fiduciary, Carol Buckmann explores a theme that runs through her new book, The Intelligent Fiduciary: the gap between the significant responsibilities ERISA fiduciaries take on and the training available to help them carry out those duties.

With host Eric Dyson, Carol discussed the three qualities of an intelligent fiduciary, why good oversight requires more than checking a box and when outside expertise becomes essential.
